I liked this but York was a sell out, it was one of about five away games our lot missed that season due to not being able to get tickets. We did, amongst others, Lincoln on a mid week, Chesterfield and Macclesfield in the open stand, thunder and lightning but a last minute goal from the Goat made it all worthwhile.


Great memories, our Oldham supporting mate used to take us in his red van, we called him Postman Pat. One of the tasks was to bring obscure beers for the trip, the stronger the better, one box of ale that didn’t get drunk was a honey lager, absolutely disgusting.

The van had garden furniture in the back for us to sit on, on the way home he switched the lights off and for some bizarre reason we had a “blind” punch up, lights back on and we’re all sat there in the seat we were originally in not knowing who had thumped you! We weren’t a bunch of Neanderthal’s either, don’t know where that came from. I quite often sat in the front to avoid the ritual, we are all still on this planet and most of us are now well into our 60’s but I wouldn’t swap those days, we had an absolute blast.

Funny thing was, it wasn't even our big day out. The players used it as a warm up match for the CL final and we sang about going to Istanbul all day long
