It's the midfield that is his problem.I watched Amorim's post-match press conference and the 2nd question is a great and obvious question...
"You've been here for 31 games, and you've won 8 games. At some stage you are going to need to accept that the way you set up your team is not working."
Amorim responds by saying "there are a lot of things that have happened in these months that you do not know about".
What is he referring to? Utd buying players he didn't want, or arguments with the players? Unfortunately the journalists don't realise what he has just said and ask their pre-prepared questions. This is never teased out.
IMO Man Utd are playing better than last season. They had a lot of possession vs City. They have some big problems though, and it's not clear to me how Amorim can overcome this:
1) Sesko was awful. Going home on the bus, I was listening to blues arguing over Sesko. One had to be shown the team sheet to prove that Sesko was playing. OK, this was his first game but what does he have in his game that would frighten you? I can't see anything. He's not quick. Nor is he a great threat in the air. It's perhaps very harsh to judge him on 1 game, but that was a poor individual performance.
2) The goalkeeper is an issue that is potentially going to cause them huge problems. At some point soon you would think Lammens is going to come in. If he struggles, which is quite likely given his age and experience, then Man Utd have a huge problem. They should have brought in Martinez. If he makes a mistake, then so what, you know he is a good keeper. If Lammens makes a mistake, he will come under huge pressure.
It's clear that Amorim might be fired if they fail to win in their next 2 games:
Chelsea (H)
Brentford (A)
Then Man Utd's board will see that CL is impossible and they will face a fundamental question: Does this manager display the qualities that we want. Do we believe in him?
In my opinion the job is too big for him and he says stupid things in his press conferences. Press conferences are not the most important part of a manager's job but they give you a window on their emotional and mental state. He says a lot of stupid things. In this press conference, when faced with a difficult question, he cracked but the media were not sharp enough to follow up on his answer ("there are lots of things that have happened in these months that you do not know about").
Ratboy didn't track Foden for the first goal, Ugarte hilariously out of position for the second, and the 3rd goal came because they'd vacated the space in midfield and their defenders had to push up to close the gap, which left them open in behind.
They need to play 3 in midfield. I'm not a manager, but I would put Masroui in there as the holding midfielder. If your center half is having to close gaps in midfield, you've got a big problem.
