But that’s only true in Europe. Everywhere else it is important and from 2025 you bet your life it will be important everywhere with 32 teams in it rather than just 7.

I can see the 2025 version being of more interest, but Is the current format really that important elsewhere?

The Intercontinental Cup, and the early World Club Cups obviously meant something to the South American clubs, but the last 10 (and 15 of the last 16) have all been won by the Europeans, which surely takes a lot of the thrill out of it for the rest of the nations.

Doesn’t seem to work that way with them. Being harder to win makes it a bigger prize for anyone that can do it.

Liverpool didn't make the back pages for more than a day or two when they won it.

Though it involves the world's 'top teams', competition-wise, it's still considered to be relatively unimportant trophy in the eyes of all but the fans of the clubs involved.
go to South America and say that and they will string you up 'lol', this comp will be 2nd best to the CL when it gets off the ground and played every 4 years, il stick with the science- it wont do the club any harm winning it but the sponsors want to see the elite players involved so any hope of sending the reserves of the reserves aint going to happen,Pep wants it and thats good enough for me

The dippers, Forest and Bayern all pulled out of the Intercontinental Cup era of the competition one time each, while the South American sides never have.

Make of that what you will and the current version, is huge in Latin America but in Europe it's seen as a meaningless competition, risking injury to players for the more important matches.

It's not very often we get a final not involving a club from outside the big two continents.

That's what I'd thought - but it's actually 7 of the last 15, so nearly half.

Had a look for viewing figures, but all I could find was an article about Fifa streaming it for free worldwide as it wasn't well watched, and another suggesting a couple of millions of Brazilians watched one match (again streamed free).

Do we have any idea if it really is popular, or is it one of those myths, where pundits who knew very little told us it was because they didn't know any better?

I think the final will be against Benzema and Kante's home team. Good game!

Given our last UCL group game is away in Belgrade on the Wednesday, unless we send some reserves I don't think we'll be able to play the Palace game that weekend.

Away in Belgrade Wednesday, Home on Saturday, Away in Jeddah on Tuesday is a big ask in my opinion with all the travel.

Doubt we get a choice.

The way it normally goes we won't be full strength for the Semi or Bill Bragg's Uncle's team.

We'll have the group sown up by the last game and can play the reserves. City will want it played on the Saturday to avoid a backlog of games at the business end of the season.

Hopefully we have won the group before the last group game and we can send the EDS team.
Straight on a plane after Palace game.
