US Politics Thread

As a stock analyst over four decades, let me point out this paragraph apparently written by a fucking financial illiterate:

"Given the company's financial straits, falling market cap and declining stock price, it is unsurprising that they would restructure their business operations and cancel unsuccessful ventures."

Yeah but the DeSantis posturing aided their decision - like all populists they have to learn that mad fucking posturing has consequences when it meets the oxygen of the real world - like Brexit has - maybe had DeSantis piped down and been encouraging he could have had a huge investment and decent jobs in his state ad Disney may have looked elsewhere to make cuts

I think my point was 1) “financial straits” isn’t a thing and is missing a modifier and 2) falling market cap and declining stock price are effectively the same thing. Then you have the stupid-ass conclusion. In other words, the person who wrote this is a fucking imbecile.

It sounds like it's written by someone from the Trump school of trash talk.

Debt default is more than 50% likely IMO. Although McCarthy presumably wants to avoid default, he has no control over the nutters in his party who don't care.

If the US does default on its obligations, I hope that the Democrats are savvy enough to pin the debacle on the Republicans.

1) Linguistically, is a modifier strictly needed? You can't be in good straits - maybe DeSantis thinks the usual "dire" or "desperate" is superfluous. Certainly in the UK "financial straits" is commonly used in Parliament and (quick Google) the New York Times has used it unqualified.

Here's a fantastic piece by Robert Reich about the antiquated system used by the US to elect its presidents: The Electoral College.

I entirely agree with Reich about the defects of the Electoral College and would like to see it replaced with a common vote system. To that end, Reich promotes the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC). The NPVIC is an agreement whereby a state agrees to give all of its electoral votes to the winner of the popular vote. The agreement goes into effect once enough states sign on such that they collectively represent an absolute majority of votes.
