I dont think anyone equated sports writers really. News journalists who write for respected and established outlets have standards to maintain that includes source led pieces. And this is why those clowns who write frivolous joke pieces about celebs and bollocks who fail in that regard find themselves on the High Court being sued, and those who do meaningful journalistic work and researched stuff about news do notMost journalists just write opinion pieces now, just look at the sports pages and the shit that's on them and then tell me that journalists are fact based.

Do you genuinely believe that there are many shoelaces out there that do their own work and not rehash/rewrite a piece given to them by an agency? Celebrities suing papers isn't the same as say the retelling of "The Russians did it" in the 2016 American election or the post Brexit reporting.
