Swalwell ends campaign for California governor. With ranked-choice voting, this is good. The Democratic herd needed to thin. Of course NOW we hear the stories about how everyone in Alameda knew about his rep with women from long ago.

Would guess Steyer will end up the leading Democratic candidate and ultimately Governor. A “benevolent billionaire” ala Bloomberg in NYC. CA used to this with popular types like Reagan and Arnold as previous govs.

With the state of the place over there you would think there would be one or at least a few of the figures who will be the opposition in order to rally around, and organise some kind of coherent entity to rally around and have a meanigful pushback and sensible opposition? Nobody in place at all

Doesn’t work like that in the U.S. The Presidential election is two and a half years away. Haven’t even had the midterms yet. No idea who the Democratic Presidential candidate will be.

Let me add — it’s better if there isn’t someone to rally around, because without an opponent to demoniz(s)e, more attention gets paid to Trump’s own issues. Plus no one is going to convince cult members to walk from Trump — they have to come to that conclusion on their own.

People are starting to distance themselves, and the crazier he gets, the easier it's going to be for his more ardent deciples to peel away, but I think it's going take something monumental to unseat him.

GOPers in the House and Senate need to believe supporting him makes it more likely they lose their next elections or get primaried as opposed to what it’s been the last 10+ years, which is the precise opposite. We are still a long, long way from that if that day ever comes.

But to your point, as we know in nearly all endeavo(u)rs in life — change comes slowly, then quickly.

If they do actually do something as mind bendingly stupid as put up Harris again, the Democrats deserve to lose and the inevitable subsequent civil war in the USA is probably a fair outcome.

They won’t though. Newsom is the obvious front runner at the moment but two years out nobody had even heard of Obama so it’ll end up being someone left field by the time the election comes round.

I actually reckon if they’d have flipped it round and Tim Walz was the candidate they’d have probably won in 24.

Deserves more than a like and tbh at this point even his daft nephew (Jethro?) would be an upgrade.
OT: ta for that, I’ve finally realized why the MIL looked familiar… shes Granny from that show….and has the same lack of graces
