UWCL Qualifying tournament - City OUT - lost 1-0 to Real Madrid

Have we retained Steph Houghton in a coaching role?

The lionesses showed that if you have a coach that understands the women's game you will be successful. I don't understand why our board doesn't get it?
Why do we need Steph Houghton in a coaching role??
We have Gareth Taylor and Jayne Ludlow…….Sorted.

'cos they don't care, we've been coasting on the England spine and the facilities for ages. If they cared, Taylor probably wouldn't have ever got the job but he certainly still wouldn't be there, and we'd have actually seen proper attempts at fixing some of the lingering problems over the last few years.

If anything, the Lionesses showed the value of hiring actual professionals (Wiegman) rather than people the execs get on with (Neville, Sampson). We'd do well to learn that lesson too.

Taylor needs to do the honourable thing and resign he’s basically winging it and has got lucky at times since in charge, what’s Nick Cushing up to these days ..
Or we could actually try and properly improve rather than just go for a familiar face. It's not like he had the WSL or UWCL cracked before he left.

My 2p on the match:

After my first half criticism of Fowler, I thought she looked much better in the 2nd half, particularly when receiving the ball out wide. Lots of potential there, so my criticism was probably a little premature.

Other than the front three, I thought almost everyone else looked like they were being played out of position. The team showed no compactness in defense, were out of position constantly and were generally shapeless, which made for an open, end-to-end spectacle but not a good match from City's perspective. At one point in the first half, I said to myself, 'If Taylor was given prime David Silva, he'd have played him as a DM'. Why were we playing Losada and Walsh, our two most creative passers, as deep DM's when we've just bought a DM and have Morgan who looks amazing when she's central breaking up play and moving the ball very tidily.

In the end, we lost to a team we really ought to be beating, and I worry about the long faces on quite a few of our 'star' players.

Good post - Sadly what we saw was painfully similar to certain games last year. Taylor failed to use the last game as a blueprint in order to beat RM - yes they had some late really good chances but they could have been beaten if we just had a coach who understands how to set up a balanced midfield. Madrid play to their strengths and they did that in both games - our fool changed the entire way we play - it's no wonder some players don't know what to do. He thinks he's a great coach but sometimes in a one off game you just have to play to your strengths and forget trying to be too clever. Great point about Losada and Walsh playing too deep - it negates any influence further up the pitch, only when it was into the last ten minutes did we get the ball quicker to the wide players who caused them problems.

Sad thing is I think the new signings are great but under this clueless muppet we will not see the best of them. Madrid played simply and allowed us to just pass it back and sideways then pressed us together to catch us on the break.

Taylor is a big problem. He signs players then as you rightly say tries to convert them into something they are not. We have the talent but until we get a good coach we will struggle to win anything. Houghton as a leader should have played, that would have given the squad a lift and Deyna should play alongside Shaw not replacing her - Fowler is a young talent but this was not the right game for her to get 90 mins. The half time substitutions told me the manager has not a clue how to win a very important one off game. Look at the chance Coombs had and blazed it over, oh how I wish Losada had been on, she would have buried it. Taylor is all talk and buzzwords but any fool can see the more experienced players found him out and then wanted out. Yikes a longer post than I wanted but I'm annoyed - in a funny way it would have been easier to accept if we'd have been beaten 4-0. I also feel any possible momentum from signing some great young players has been thrown away by tactical ineptness.

Apologies for the long post fellow blues.

Excellent post. It’s going to be a long season.

I'm wondering if the ethos of playing the same way throughout the club regardless of which team is hindering us here. Taylor is obviously limited as a coach and can't make the fine adjustments necessary to get the best from the players in a rigid 4-3-3 but there is no scope for him to try something different. I commented earlier about a like-for-like replacement of Shaw for Castellanos when we're chasing a game. Why not bring on the latter for Fowler instead? While Fowler improved in the 2nd half she still wasn't affecting the game in the final 3rd while playing in that slightly more advanced position. Shaw at least looked as if she had the potential to score and bringing on a more attacking option to play nearer to her may have opened things up a bit more to get that goal we needed.

I watched an interview with Sam Kerr during which she and the interviewer agreed that Fowler is the next big thing in Australian football.
