Tried to include a brief explanation above, but that seemed like popular consensus after reading throughout this summer. Most were reluctant to lose Navas because he was our only pacey winger. Martin seemed like a non-starter. Few wanted to take a chance on Wright starting if we suffered an injury to Hart, and were also under the impression that signing Willy and leaving him out of Europe might ruffle his feathers one game into his City tenure. And Milner is HG, is he not? All of which boiled down to Jovetic drawing the short straw... not my choice, but that was the consensus I had gathered.
Yeah Milner is home grown but that is why Wright would have to step in for Willy. I agree that Jovetic is the consensus on here but I think that may be based on last season. I think Pellers really rates him.
When it comes down to it...Selling a 29 year old Negredo for a 25 year old Reus or a 22 year old Isco is a no brainer.
If that becomes a reality dropping a 32 year old backup keeper from the CL and a utility wide man (who just dropped from 4th choice to 5th and who is running his contract out) is also a no brainer in my mind. Even with the slight risk with Wright as your backup.
If Willy was signed with the understanding that he won't be eligible to play in Europe then I'm fine with the above, if it means a player like Reus on the books.
If it means Jovetic sits out of European contention, I'd prefer to let it ride and start the Reus courtship for next summer. With Jovetic raring to go and full of optimism, and viewing this season as a clean slate, I think that leaving him out of Europe would lead to an amicable request for us to find him a new home, possibly in Italy.
