Would you want VAR scrapped?

Everyone seems to think that was onside. I want the linesman to be in control, so I can't blame the linesman for flagging. The two players were well ahead of Rudiger there and just moved to soon. Unless you are telling me de Ligt was smart enough to judge his run against where Rudiger's heel was at that precise moment. Which is clearly bollocks. He was looking along the line and moved too early, imho.

The reason it is a mess is purely the VAR protocol for offside. Should the linesman have flagged, or let it go? Should the referee have blown or let it go? When was the end of the active phase? Where was Rudiger's heel to the mm (ffs)? Which, again imho, is all bollocks and is ruining yet another part of the game.
Only De Ligt was offside in the buildup, and he did not impact play, hence why various referees (acting as official consultants for broadcasters) and pundits have come out to say the decision from the referee to blow play dead as the ball fell to him (right before he took his shot that ended up in the back of the net) was wrong.

Otherwise, agree with your post regarding the way VAR has impacted on-pitch officiating and fan confidence in officiating more broadly.

The more I think about the VAR offside debacle, the more I see parallels with the way the PL have gone about trying to stop City. They have become fixated on an objective and are introducing more and more convoluted rules to the extent that it's almost impossible for the average fan to follow what is going on any more.

For offside, they have become fixated on decisions as a fact down to the last mm and have had to introduce new "guidelines" for when a linesman should flag, when a referee should blow, deliberate plays, different phases and expensive new systems to the extent they have forgotten it should be all about gaining an advantage and giving advantage to the attacker.

For City, they have become fixated on stopping investment and have had to introduce new rules on profitability, squad costs, associated parties, comparable bids, anchors and the like to the extent they have forgotten it should be about sustainability and debt levels.

Anyway, just an observation that the same sort of people are sending the game only one way by how they manage the game in different areas. To the dogs, imho.

I’d be fascinated to hear the comms. between the referee and the VAR on this one.

that second one is purely on the dickhead ref. it was right of VAR to tell the ref to have a look. what can they do if the ref still decides that is a red? joke decision , awful ref.

That’s why I’d be interested in hearing the comms. Or more specifically, a translation of it.

I can’t imagine what he could possibly have said to the VAR to justify sticking with his original decision.

Indeed, but don't you think the 'average fan' has a much better idea than the 'average ref'?

what else can it be aside ... '' I'll stick with Red, that was a clear block etc etc''

problem with VAR is not the system, its the way its used, personally think ex-referees who no longer are on the pitch should be in control of VAR and on field referees should be nowhere near VAR duties, on too many occasions we see inconsistency from refs and too the point they don't want to overrule their mates onfield decision, need to break these cliques up

Whatever you may think of Webb, one of the first things he identified when he got the job, was working towards having specialist VARs.

Not as easy as it sounds though. Being a specialist in a job that didn’t exist just a few years ago, is easier said than done.
