This wouldn’t work here because:

1. VAR would not intervene.

2. If VAR did have the bollox, the ref would look at the screen, shrug shoulders and carry on with initial decision.

The implementation of VAR isn’t the issue, it’s the direction that the powers that be have chosen to take.

I think it is the implementation (especially systems), the use by VAR officials, and the discretion of on field officials, as there are significant deficiencies in all three realms, only made worse by their continued rules and policies changes to make the entire apparatus less transparent (rather than more).

But I do take your point that it would likely expose the supreme bias and/or incompetence of PL referees.

I thought they were using the graphic they use in the Chumps League this season for offsides?
Is it called the semi automated system or summat?!

It’s the clubs who voted against its introduction. At least 10 of them presumably.

Edit: actually, it apparently was not voted on, as it never made it on to the agenda for debate and vote by the PL clubs at the Annual General Meeting in June.

The only real information as to why is a nebulous reference to “Chief Executives across the league” feeling it was not a “fool-proof” system and that it was too early to adopt it, despite it being successfully used in the Champions League, World Cup, and now La Liga this season.

I doubt we will ever find out, but I would be very interested to know which executives of which clubs held that position, especially after the admitted VAR mistakes involving Liverpool, United, Arsenal, Brighton, Forest, and Wolves last season (especially the wrong offside decisions that went in favour of Liverpool because VAR didn’t have sufficient camera angles to “accurately determine the offside line” at Anfield).

There is a distinct lack of direct quotes attributed to anybody on the subject.

Journalists seemingly in the know were giving the impression it was a formality throughout most of last season, that they’d introduce it this year. But then just these vague messages that they didn’t think the benefits outweighed the hassle of changing it. And technology is moving that fast that it would be too soon outdated to bother with.

I’ve seen another non quote that ‘they’ think the four extra cameras at grounds this year will ensure the Arsenal one V Liverpool and the Liverpool V Wolves one won’t be possible anymore.

Who knows? Time will tell whether there’s an improvement this season I suppose.

Yeah, that millimetre their toe was over the offside line really gave them both a huge advantage over the defenders, thank god everyone got to stand around for 5 minutes each time, none the wiser to what was going on or whether a goal could be celebrated or not. We're so lucky to have such a super accurate and timely answer to the oft asked question, was the attacker gaining an advantage by being in an offside position? Wonderful how it keeps the game flowing and doesn't break up the momentum and the spectacle of the sport in any way whatsoever.

The lfc review took ages. Eiother whilst they found a way of letting it go. Or it was closer than we think. Now sure that picture is correct either... The ball has left his foot.

They are making a conscious effort to speed things up this season. The reason those two took longer than most this weekend was because they were overturning incorrect onfiejd decisions. So they need to run it through to the final graphic to show the evidence of the error.

In cases where they see that the correct decision has clearly been made early on in the review, they’re curtailing it there and then and telling the referee to crack on, without bothering running it through to the bit where it produces the graphic.
