VAR shit the bed again today. Matos should have been given a straight red for violent conduct when he deliberately smashed Rico in the head with his forearm moments before his industrial challenge Manu which saw him receive a yellow. Ref gave nothing for the first one. VAR had a perfect view of it.

It's obvious they've been instructed to try and keep games competitive.

if only there wasn’t any VAR and it was just left to the ref on a weekly basis aye.

The referee had a perfect view of it also, but again, I suspect he was also under instructions to keep the game competitive.

They do seem to give lower league teams licence to be more "agricultural" in these games, allowing the more skillful players to get clattered, rather than expecting the lower league teams to wind it in a bit when playing in the big league. Result: injury again.

Let's see how that works out in Wigan tonight.

It doesn't make any difference. That's the point.

So we just ignore the countless time VAR does get decisions correct ?
The offsides that VAR have checked and over turned correctly, the penalty decisions , red card decisions etc

Im all for knocking VAR when officials have got it wrong but to say ‘it makes no difference’ is disingenuous in my view.

In its current guise, it’s shit.

In the situation where the referee doesn't make the right decision and VAR doesn't do anything, then, yes, it makes no difference.

Quite frankly, getting offsides right to the millimetre when no-one in the ground can judge it doesn't appeal to me and never has. As for penalties and red cards I can only assume you don't watch the same games as me.

The benefits of VAR, and I could probably list one or two if I tried hard enough, aren't worth the disruption to the game, imo.

When it takes to long to get outcome correct and when they get the decision wrong ‘in my view’ then I totally agree it’s shit.

When they get it right, im grateful for it, even when it’s against my own team. Again, in my view.

I just know how infuriating it will be without VAR when CLEAR reds are not given, wrong penalty decisions awarded and miles offside goals allowed to stand etc.

Yeah, I fear Wigan will get kicked off the park

The problem is not VAR which seems to work in other countries but the total incompetence and arrogance of English referees. The tackle on Akanji was a red card all day yesterday. It looked terrible from the stand and the officials had a good view.

I know I must sound like a broken record to you, but apparent red cards are not given now, penalty decisions are still wrongly awarded and you can count the number of offsides that were miles off and not given before VAR on the fingers of one hand, I think.

All that has happened, apart from a ridiculous accuracy on offsides, is that now we complain all the time about VAR rather than about the referee.

The automated offside system is all we need for now. Your stubborn defense of VAR is quite tiresome. Also the earth isn't flat by the way...

It's not a stubborn defence, i fully accept the downsides and agree with many how infuriating VAR is.

My only main defence is not to scrap it completely, that doesn't make me a VAR 'lover' , i also do think many ignore the positives it brings when there is a major decision a ref would have got completely wrong had it not been for VAR.

Not a fan but for me if they :-
1 Adopted the automated offside system which they declined.
2 Define the handball rule more clearly and streamline it.
3 Use. VAR more efficiently where the incompetent buffoons have the courage to "referee" the game correctly, ie OVERULE it when its blatantly wrong, there have been too many this season.
How many times have teams been denied penalties at Old Trafford , if its a penalty, its a penalty. Baconface wouldn't have won 13 titles with it in operation.
It can work so much better if they WANT it to do.Thought Riley was bad but somehow our friend Howard has took it today a completely new level.

It does make a difference. It’s ruined the game. The elation of scoring a goal, oh, hang on a minute (or 4) whilst we check recheck and drain the life out of the game.
Fuck. It. Off.
The fans never asked for it and they re fans don’t want it.

I’ll live with those decisions- just like we did for 130 odd years of professional football before this shite was forced upon us.
And leave me to go ballistic when we score. The ground was virtually silent when we got that own goal yesterday- everyone holding back, thinking “there’ll be something this’ll be disallowed for.”
Then a muted, half-arsed cheer when it was given
