VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

When was this 5cm rule enacted, and why doesn’t anybody else know? We’ve been told, like you say, that offside isn’t subjective, but now it is.

What a farce, once again finding a new law to allow for obvious cheating.
I can remember it once before when St Marcus “scored” v Dippers, but it then disappeared until Saturday. It’s meant to favour the attacker when it’s a close call, so give the goal if they are level & you can be slightly wrong, but the long VAR review suggests that here they spent ages to work out whether it was 4 or 6 cm offside, which wasn’t the point of the rule.
The rule is now back in the box till needed again.

Don't get me wrong. I do not want Var full stop but if we have to have them then they need to be open and honest. It clearly isn't an open and honest process, we'll it is open, open to manipulation.
I was open minded to begin with, hoping for an improvement on the on field refereeing that we had prior to it's introduction. Even the sceptics who doubted they'd ever be any skulduggery involved must now see how badly wrong they were.

If there is a ofside tolerance level then that can be manipulated! I’d want all premier clubs to know to be told that the tolerance level is in favour of the striker attacker! Not change it for other games for certain teams, they can’t just make it the tolerance level the other way so a goal is disallowed but that 5cm tolerance level! And I hope all clubs has all the data from every game to assessed all the var decisions..

No mention of any tolerance level here and which way is the tolerance applied? If both players are in the tolerance level how is determined ?

Interesting that the Oxford dictionary has one of the following definitions for tolerance :

“ the ability or willingness to tolerate the existence of opinions or behaviour that one dislikes or disagrees with.”

The dippers obviously get at least a week of intolerance.

The tolerance level is pure gaslighting, no one would complain if it was 5cm cos we wouldn’t fucking know, yet you could see with your naked eye, unless they are now saying 5cm on the VAR computer screen which is probably scaled at about 6 ft.

Now why is it showing Dias jumping & drawing the line on the arm.

This match determined who advanced to the WC automatically and who went to the playoff.

Little push waiting for a header in his own half leads to a goal 20 seconds later. Referee was right in front of the incident on the pitch and saw nothing!!

Then after a goal is scored VAR intervenes, they bring it back to the foul that occurred 20 seconds before to disallow the goal that followed. FARCICAL!

The Premier League introduced a tolerance level at the start of the 2021/22 season. On the graphics before this season, the clue that it was being applied was that instead of the normal two lines showing up to indicate the attacker and defender, just one green line would appear on the screen. It was quite a common occurrence once you knew what to look for.

It's the main reason why it took them so long to introduce SAOT after they announced it was coming in. No other competition in the world has a tolerance level, so the tech. people were apparently having trouble incorporating it into the SAOT system.

Yes, the SAOT tolerance was explained when it was introduced in the PL but here is my problem with it (well, one of my problems with it): this is supposed to be the bestest and accuratist SAOT in the world, which is why it took so long, and it still needs a tolerance. So where does that leave us with every FIFA and UEFA offside decision ever made which is measured to the mm without tolerance? Cup competitions with immediately severe effect in which the decisions are unreliable?

I keep trying to explain that graphics created on some basis that has never been explained properly shouldn't hide the fact that offside decisions are still inherently unreliable and shouldn't be considered reliable just because they can be presented nicely.

It's everything that's wrong with the game at the moment, micro-managenent at all times and obfuscation when necessary. Completely the opposite of what is required.

Yet again I am posting about how shit this whole thing is.
I said last week about Newcastles goal, if it cannot be decided in 10 seconds, i.e. not a clear offside, it's a goal.
Today it took at least 3 minutes to decide our 2nd wasnt offside. Bollocks.

But my biggest complaint is that the match going fan has no idea what is happening. The penalty, what was the delay ? Were they checking a possible red card? That it wasn't a penalty ? Why am I, sat in the stadium, left in the dark ?

It's fucking shit and I'm sick if it.

It's a piss take how people who pay to see a game in the flesh are then treated like mushrooms when VAR comes into play.

The dodgy stick brigade are getting all the information and the angles. Right down to the **** in stockley park looking for Bernie's left bollock hanging out to try and rule out our second today.

Was it Silva they were checking? The SAOT image they showed after the incident showed some big guy jumping and a defender's knee playing him onside? Or was I dreaming?

SAOT camera's in the PL run at 100fps.

Fastest PL players can run up to 9.7m/s.

This equates to around 9.7cm per frame between on and offside for the fastest players IF the defender is static, but could be a greater distance if the defender is initially behind the ball and closing on the attacker.

Even if you half that speed for the slowest players it's 4.35cm per frame with the sane caveat regarding closing targets.

Basically, they are still guessing.

It's even worse when the defender and attacker are moving in different directions and when you take into the account that the kick point can be another half frame forward or backwards (don't believe this interpolation nonsense, it just isn't possible). The accuracy the authorities like to portray is just gaslighting based on sexy graphics that fool most people.

Yep. The paying punter gets the shit test end of the stick

Something I think has changed in recent years is that refs dont seem to know what constitutes a foul nowadays. Shoulder charges like Nunes yesterday becoming a yellow, a couple in Utds game today, just now in the Chelsea game straight forward classic fouls just not given, other innocuous stuff being carded.

It feels like they have lost the plot compared with refs in previous years. Maybe its the increased scrutiny or social media but I think VAR has contributed to all the confusion that stinks the game out nowadays.
