VAR Discussion Thread

Var generally ruins active, contact sports.

Cricket, great, doesnt take long.
Tennis, matter of seconds.

Rugby it works better but again it takes away the fun of a try being scored and can take an utter age as they dissect a try
Cricket have their own problems with tech as seen in the ashes. But mostly runs pretty well.
Shame we can’t have the rugby league offside tech….if he looks onside he is!

The 5cm rule applies when semi- automated offside is working. It was not working last night for this instance, and so the 5cm rule was not invoked.
This isn’t correct. The tolerance level was introduced at the start of the ‘21-‘22 season. The ‘advantage’ of the old system, which was used last night, is there is a visual indication when the tolerance level is being used. The graphic produces just one line, instead of the two we saw last night.

SAOT has incorporated the tolerance level. But there’s no clue when they show their ‘cartoon’ graphic whether it has or hasn’t come into play.

Thank you for correcting me. It is obviously more complicated than I thought.

The blue line which was the defensive line clearly was drawn on Pope. The red line is where Haaland’s foot is.

This is my take though, the decision isn’t ridiculous because of Haaland’s position - he was quite clearly stood offside, and it’s not as close as a lot of others I’ve seen, his entire foot is beyond Pope and therefore offside.

It’s ridiculous because the defender is never in a million years stopping that from going in. It’s flashed past him from a yard away. Haaland could be in another post code and it would make no difference.
Pope wasn't the last defender though in this instance. It was Thiaw

I wasn't aware of this 5cm tolerance rule until now.
What is it exactly and does it work in favour of the attacker?
Was it used for Newcastle's second goal against us in the league game when the lines drawn seemed to indicate offside?
That's the 1st time anyone had heard of it!!!

I don’t doubt what you say but that is ludicrous. Apply a tolerance to what is in theory (or sold to us as) the more accurate system, but not to the less accurate system. You really couldn’t make it up

Got to feel for the linos though. They get a split second to have to watch when the ball was played and look across to check for offside. Those clowns atwell and cavanagh took six bleeding minutes last night and still got it wrong.

The SAOS was not down last night. It was because it was so congested between the players it could not work as it should
Where have you seen that it wasn't down ?
Certainly the bbc are reporting it was.

I ask because again it highlights how they con us. Two different reasons, it was broken/it was too congested.
This adds fuel to the conspiracy fires, there is no official statement, fuck the fans we can con them every time.
