VAR (PL introduction 2019)

CITY IMPACT NEXT YEAR....... We are gonna need a more consistent penalty taker. I have a feeling we will get a minimum double of pens (as will most teams). Shirt pulling from corners will be a couple at least, then handball

Love Sergio but not his pens

Hopefully Jesus will be on the pitch, to take them ;-)

There was an incident in the Australia v Norway game tonight, that shows what a shit show it is.

A "foul" just outside the box resulted in a free kick and yellow card, but the replay showed it wasn't a foul, however because its outside the box, its not reviewed. Fortunately the free kick was saved not scored, but if that "foul" was in the box the penalty would have been over turned to a drop ball, and the booking wouldn't count, so now a yard could make the difference between a goal and no goal, and if the booked player commits another foul she/he could see a second yellow, and so red card.

Var will hopefully help eradicate some of the obvious bad decisions, but the maginal 50/50 calls will still be down to the judgement and professionalism (or otherwise) of the official watching the replay. Still plenty of scope to 'interpret ' the rules and evidence.

Absolutely agree. Incidents of 'handball' where it is completely accidental and has no impact on a goalscoring opportunity. So if the law of the game is to be implemented strictly, how about this which occurs 20 times or more in every game...a ball is heading for the goal line and the ball is shielded from the attacking player by the defender. The defender places his body between the attacking player and the ball so the ball runs out for a goal kick. Under Law 12 a Direct Free Kick is awarded when a player 'impedes an opponent with contact'. Can anyone with refereeing experience throw any light on that ?
Don’t know the exact rule but you’re allowed to ‘shield’ the ball as long as it is within playing distance even if you haven’t touched it. It’s one I’ve always thought needs changing in that I don’t think you should be deemed in control of the ball until you’ve touched it.

This is another one that drives me mad as a spectator and a player, especially as it's specifically addressed in the FIFA Laws of the Game:

"A player may shield the ball by taking a position between an opponent and the ball if the ball is within playing distance and the opponent is not held off with the arms or body."

So, when the defender backs into the striker, he's using his body, and when he sticks out his arms to stop the striker getting round him, he's using his arms - both should result in a free kick (or penalty) to the striker. But unlike trifling handball, they don't seem to have any interest in strictly enforcing the rules.

Incidentally, my current approach as a player is just to knock over a defender who's doing this excessively. As long as it's not too aggressive (don't want a yellow), it gives them a free kick right on the line (and often off to the side) which is much worse for them than a goal-kick, and I get less pissed-off.

One statement gets me on all of this;

'Should only be reviewed if there is a clear and obvious error by the referee'.

Where did this actually come from?

It doesn't ever have appeared to have happened and to actually check if there's been a 'clear and obvious' error, they have to review it.

And from what we've seen so far, they just take the decision away from the ref anyway.

Asking him to look at something again (or as City v Schalke, just tell him to award a penalty), surely lop-sides his opinion prior to him seeing it again on the VAR screen, especially when someone is advising him through an earpiece that, 'if I was you, I'd have awarded a penalty for that'.

Which then opens up a further discussion on the secrecy of the 'conversation or advise' being administered by the VAR ref, never mind the obvious questions the ref should always ask;

'Have you shown me every available clip?'
or,
'Are there any further clips or angles which may affect my decision?'

So, it would be fair to say that as in other sports, these conversations should be broadcast, so all fans know how the final decision has come about.

Crikey, apologies for all that, the post was only about clear and obvious error and now I want to talk about adding the correct time on!
