VAR Thread - 2021/22

Just rewatched the Rodri handball incident from the point where Deli Ali played the ball through , Richarlison is leaning forward and clearly his head and shoulders appear offside , had he scored i'm pretty sure it would have been chalked off , as it was he got a shot off which hit Edersons legs , looped up and the bounce caught Rodri out , but he was also being put under pressure from Richarlison who had gained that advantage from originally being in an offside position...
Honestly cant understand why nobody in the media (other than Pep, in his after match interview) brought attention to this, if Sky or Match of the Day had put the lines up to show wether Richarilson was offside or not , then it would have saved a lot of piss boiling . They spent enough time discussing it , then surely taking a few minutes to acertain wether the penalty would have stood anyway would have been worthwhile..
When will people understand that the media are there to create drama, just like the BBC with Eastenders, ITV with Corrie, etc. They are in the entertainment business so that’s what they ‘create’, having paid so much for the game then you can’t complain when they have a say.

We like to believe it’s a sport but just sport doesn’t bring in the subscriptions.

VAR is very much open to manipulation and corruption.

Drawing lines to show offsides by millimetres is misleading as the technology is not accurate enough to calculate such distances.

Lukaku looked onside to me yesterday but was ruled off by the finest of margins..

Ronaldo, Salah, Mane and Rashford no doubt may well have been shown to be 'just on' on another day, dependant on the importance of the goal scored..

Rodri's alleged handball at the weekend may or may not have been handball.

The pictures that were shown were not conclusive.

The ref didn't see it clearly, VAR looked at it for over a minute and couldn't say for sure if it was handball or not.

Therefore it couldn't be given as a penalty so no penalty was awarded..

Notwithstanding that Richarlison may well have been offside in the build up..

However, if the conversation between the VAR official and the ref had been audible then the baying, frothing at the mouth SKY pundits, media and the rest of the 'city are cheating bastards' rabble would at least have had an explanation as to how VAR had reached the decision they did.

Until VAR becomes transparent, it will always be looked at by the vast majority of football fans as being dodgy at best.

American football has audible refs telling the fans in the stadium and the watching millions what's happened, it's not that hard really..!

In conclusion, one has to ask then why is VAR not fully transparent ?

There has to be a reason..

Betting syndicates ?
The PL is a multi £billion pound industry..

Result manipulation ?
Ensure certain teams are placed in favourable positions within the league. The rags winning an unprecedented 20+ penalties a couple of seasons ago to clinch 4th spot for example..

SKY / BT subscriptions ?
Both broadcasters have billions invested in the PL. Both broadcasters get to hear VAR discussions as they happen as acknowledged by their matchday commentators.
Why can't the public hear the same conversations ?

Ensuring the most popular teams get the necessary assistance they need to keep the Far Eastern fans subscribing would be most preferable to both these broadcasters.

We've already been told that "a weak Manchester United is bad for the brand"

Red shirt favouritism ?
See above..

Who knows..!

It might of course be none of the above and VAR may in fact just be a honest tool, implemented to assist the referees..!

Not sure about that last bit to be honest..!
If you want to go full tinfoil, imagine if the PL disallowed the handball because they wanted us to win, only for them to turn the tables in the Derby and favour United?

Gives the Rags a hand-up in the CL race and Liverpool an even better chance of a quadruple.

Only joking though, that could never happen. Could it?

And that’s where people differ. I didn‘t see any clear evidence that it was in the red zone so how can VAR overturn?

mate it was absolutely handball. Anyone who has played the game at any level knows it.

We could have a debate about whether we are use a few decisions or whatever but I’d just prefer the game to be officiated properly

Great post. The margin for error one on offsides is big for me. What is it? Does anyone know? Is it transparent? If not, why the hell are goals being chalked off for it. It’s all pretend

As long as there is secrecy who is the match commander, why isnt the ref mind up etc etc there will be suspicion and allegations.
Any sensible organisation would do everything they could to show it is above board. The fact that the premier league don't says a hell of a lot.

Second pic is misleading as that is after the ball has hit his arm and is dropping. It is moving away from his arm unless he defied the laws of physics and the ball hit his arm and instead of bouncing away it rolled down his arm. Problem with the t-shirt law is that nobody has defined what it means. As you can see in the left hand picture the ball albeit a tiny fraction hits his sleeve but what does the law say. All the ball must hit, some of it, more than half etc. Hence why VAR had to stick with the on field decision which was only made as the ref couldn't see as is line of sight was blocked. Maybe if they went back to see if Richarlison was offside to start with then we wouldn't still be talking about this days later.

You could argue that the ball hits some of the sleeve and therefore not handball.
If they did not continually change the rules there would not be a problem.
We managed for a hundred years with the same handball rule. In the last few years it has been changed every season.
By the way, it was handball.

Even with scouse tinted glasses on that was never hand ball in a million years. Said so at the time and for once VAR did the right thing. Not sure who you played the game with but it wasn't on Hough End!
