VAR thread 2022/23

It doesn't really matter if it's cowardice, corruption or incompetence, the issue seems to be reaching critical mass.

Fulham had their meltdown because they think they've been shafted so many times by the referees that it's corruption, Arsenal got a referee fired because they kicked up such a fuss, Wolves have had 3 apologies in just over a month from Howard Webb for major errors and Brighton will be raging after today.

They have to release the transcripts of the VAR conversations after the matches at a minimum.

They're destroying public confidence in the game.

Ultimately what they really need to do is rewrite the rule book with VAR in mind. They end up getting into ridiculous problems because they're trying to stick to rules that weren't written with video replay in mind. Things like a handball should be judged by the impact they had on the play, not some nebulous idea of intent based on natural arm position.
You forgot the Rashford offside not offside decision vs us. Still annoys me so much.

Atwel the referee should be all over the back pages calling him out for being inept corrupt! But we know it’s banned to say this about referees!

Atwell appointed the sacrificial lamb in the final desperate attempt to get rid of VAR so that PIGMOL can go back to the days of brown envelopes.

All correct apart from writing the rules with VAR in mind, imo.

I think the opposite should be done - the rules should be written with naked-eye precision in mind.

Let the linesmen decide offside. By all means review goals for blatant offsides but forget lines, parallax and perspective, if it isn't obvious from the grass lines, leave it alone. Then fans, viewers and pundits all have the same information in real time in almost all cases. There will be differences of opinion, of course, but there will always be. This quest for absolute precision is pure folly.

For handball, just use deliberate
/accidental/gaining advantage again. It's entirely subjective, but it will always be no matter how many clarifications you have. So keep it simple. Again, anyone watching will have the same view, even if opinions differ.

All imho, of course.

I can argue about refs and the use of a VAR all day long. I find it stunning that a VAR team can’t exclude mistakes like the ones at the Spurs-Brighton game. And it happens nearly every week for ever since VAR was introduced.

VAR has NOT improved decision taking in any way. And it is part of many decisions that destroys football. Unless you like not able to celebrate a goal without an anxious wait after that.
