Veganism

Try watching this with the sound on, which is standard practice in the UK & tell me if you think this is cruelty or not?

How do you know that is standard practise in the UK? (the vid says Australia)

The reason i ask is that i used to work for a company that designed food & food processing machinery. Every year they used to send us to the big trade show at the NEC.
On display there was quite a few 'automated' pig killing machines (with videos showing how they worked), but there was nothing at all like that gas chamber thing shown on your vid.

I think the title of the video describes what it is, it is footage of pigs going into a gas chamber. The video was posted in reponse to one person saying animals aren't capable of feeling pain & another saying that they were against animal cruelty. My question of the footage is does it look like the pigs are suffering & in pain on the video & is their treatment cruel do you think? I haven't read all of the many comments on the youtube page, to check what people have written & wasn't trying to make any kind of holocaust comparison.

I haven't used the term, but on your point about referencing the word holocaust. The word actually means: "destruction or slaughter on a mass scale", such as in the term nuclear holocaust. A Jewish activist called Gary Yourofsky actually came up with the term "animal holocaust" & Israel now has the most vegans per capita in the world, largely as a resut of Yourofsky's activism there. That may be where some people get the term from, however I don't refer to this myself.

Do you find the actual footage distasteful also or is it just the use of language in the comments that upsets you?
My problem is the gas chamber reference in the title of the video which I believe was used deliberately by the maker to invoke the Holocaust, which seems to be backed up by many of the comments. I appreciate that wasn't your intention in your post and you didn't personally reference the holocaust but it seems to be a bit of a theme amongst the more radical vegans to equate animal slaughter with human genocide and the Holocaust is the most used comparison.
As for the footage itself, it's never pleasant to watch animals suffer, however the language in some of the comments was largely inspired by the title of the video I would say, rather than the video itself. To me, that reduces the impact of the video as it spawns discussions like this which are not really relevant to the issue of animal slaughter.

About a third of pigs in the UK are killed in gas chambers. Info below with sources including gov.uk documents:

One of the methods of slaughter for pigs in the UK is the gas chamber, where groups of pigs are herded into metal cages which are then dropped into a chamber that is filled with carbon dioxide. Once inside the chamber, the pigs scream and thrash, fighting for their lives for up to 30 seconds. This method of slaughter is used for UK supermarkets including Tesco, ASDA, Sainsbury’s, Lidl and Waitrose.

When the pigs reach slaughter age at around 6 months, they are transported in cramped and over-crowded trucks with no water or food - regardless of the weather.

1/3 of pigs in the UK are killed in gas chambers.

The other certified humane method of pig slaughter in the UK is electrical stunning with the aim to render the animals unconscious before they have their throats slit, however stunning is often poorly executed by rushed slaughterhouse workers which results in an estimated 1.8 million pigs regaining consciousness on the production line each year and being fully conscious as they die from blood loss.

I guess Veganism is just a militant brand of Saladism, with online radishalisation and propaganda in pursuit of VS, their caloriephate where the Western sheep, cows and pigs are rewarded with the promise of eternal life. This slightly differs from the teachings of IS, who seek to murder the western sheep, cows and pigs as heretics. Early leeks from insider sauces suggest the developed world is under threat from suicide plums, and intelligence suggests the presence of mass grapes in VS territory.

Jesus christ can we not just all do our own thing without preaching,i'm a veggie but even vegans get on my nerves

Who's preaching? We are discussing veganism on a thread about veganism. I didn't start the thread. I have just asked people questions & responded to questions from other people.

What made you turn vegetarian?

Tut. You've made me hungry now.

I was at an event in London last week called Vegan Nights and there were loads of really good food stalls with 100's of people there and massive queues to buy the food.
I'm absolutely staggered at this, you mean that there was a vegan event, called Vegan Nights, and vegans were queuing up to buy vegan food?

Stunning revelation.

The part of my post you are talking about is this:

"This is growing, whether people like it or not. I was at an event in London last week called Vegan Nights and there were loads of really good food stalls with 100's of people there and massive queues to buy the food."

The event was full of all kinds of people, not just vegans, who were there for the quality & variety of food on offer. The event was just one of many now taking place, showcasing plant based food and was rammed on a Thursday night with most places selling out, and ridiculous queues. My post was highlighting the growing demand for plant based food from vegans & non vegans. You will notice most supermarkets & restaurants are now starting to offer plant based options as the demand is growing. A lot of the big companies are getting on board with this.

You should try some of the food, you might be surprised at how good it is.

There are pictures of the sorts of things that were available on the link below. There was some excellent food:

Have you ever tried any plant based places?

I've been to a garden centre...

Speaking up about something that you believe to be seriously wrong on a thread about that subject, is not ramming your beliefs down someones throat, people can choose not to click on the thread. I am not going on to threads that are unrelated and talking about this on there, I'm talking about this just on this thread. If we took the view that things will never change, we would never progress with anything, women would still not have the right to vote & there would still be slavery going on. I wasn't aware of a lot of the brutal practices that go on in animal agriculture, if someone hadn't given me that info, I may have carried on supporting these practices by buying the products that cause the unimaginable suffering to creatures that feel pain, fear & distress the same as we do.

We don't all have to see eye to eye, that is the point of a debate.
