Vincent Kompany - 2016/17 performances

Thats an opinion based on having no knowledge of his situation whatsoever.

That describes most opinions on here, and in the world at large. I have loads of opinions on this, that and the other. In fact, there's very little I don't have an opinion on!!! If I had a fraction of the knowledge to go with them, I might have considered one of those little blue boxes on Level 2!

Ill be buzzing if hes in the starting line up at Wembley. He was outstanding last night and showed no signs of letting up because of injury. Cart ended Costa, Hazard & Courtois without thinking twice about it.

Cant see him starting against Hull, but if he plays once a week, play at Southhampton and then a weeks rest for wembley, come on!

Just happy Kompany came through 90min and showed what a terrific defender he is i.e. what we have been missing the last few years.
Let's hope he can build on this and against expectations play another few seasons for us. His presence is so important to the team. And he was as rusty as a 10 year old car in the early 70ies ...

Good to see the big man back and playing pretty well considering how long he has been out. All about recovery now though, hopefully he trains well and is ready when we need him; probably not for Hull this weekend but for Southampton away and the FA Cup Semi Final.

Think we can forgive him a bit of ring rust Dax.
I have nothing against the performance. If you look closely its not Komps performance that is under critic, but rather the different prisms of viewing how well a player played, which often is dependent on who the player being discussed is.

I totally agree with the analysis below. But notice how the deflections were correctly deemed "unlucky", I'm simply saying had the player in question been someone else, said player was guaranteed to not get the same favorable view from the majority.

By the way you can take Doma's opinion below and it mirrors exactly what I saw yesterday and in his prior comebacks. He was a lot more comfortable and generally solid.

Was pretty good, unluckily he cost us the game with two deflections, but as far as defending goes he wasn't bad.

I thought he looked much less nervous and less like an accident waiting to happen tonight than on previous returns. This season may be over as far as the league goes, but if Kompany could play the majority of the next 9 games and show he's worth a squad place then it could be huge.

Brilliant to see Vinny back tonight. It was about the only positive to come out of the game.
Considering the length of time he was out and the opponents he was excellent.
He did everything that Otemendi wouldn't have done like moved the ball well at the back, intercepted well, showed leadership, was brave and even offered a threat in their box.
Hope he is around for Wembley.
I have to think that maybe he has been held back for too long and could have been an important difference, especially at Monaco.

IMO, Ota is the better ball player from the back. Yes its great to have Vinnie back and he played well, but to have a pop at one of ours (for the wrong reasons you gave), I just didn't see the need

Interesting view, I doubt Otamendi would have gotten the same response had he been in that position.

But I digress, good to see him last the whole game.

It's not really an interesting view as he's just stating the obvious that as a centre half Vinny was where he should have been. The less said about Dinho over the last 6 few months though the better.

Kompany was absolutely superb after so long out.

I disagree on Otto being the better ball player..he makes so many way ward passes.....look what happened int he arsenal game with the mis controlled pass that nearly fell for Ozil....vinnie had a number of those last night that were perfectly cushioned to someone else and the rest of his passing was very good as well with some great balls into feet in the midfield areas.
Costa would have bullied Ottomendi last night...he didnt stand a chance against VK.....he barely got hold of the ball all night and os much Costa went looking for John Stones on a number of occasions. Costa knew he was beaten and normally in those situations he tires to be aggressive and bully the centre half....last night he just sat on the turn with his hands up knowing he could do nothing about it as his intimidation tactics were a waste of time to even try

Yes I know Vinny was where he was supposed to be. I'm just saying I've seen Ota and Kolarov get blamed for not closing down the attacking player quickly enough in a similar position.

I'm in agreement that he is generally in the right place, and yes he could have reacted better, sight the danger earlier, or throw himself at the shot like Micah often did back in the day. But those would be extraordinary feats.

Rather he just tracked the ball correctly and was ready to support if Clichy got beat, but the ball was cut back to Hazard who scored off an unfortunate deflection. His movement an actions constituted acceptable behaviour in those circumstances, and the fact that a goal ensued doesn't change these fact.

I'm just a bot amused by the seeming majority agreeing with that analysis. When in the past this has not been the case if it had been others like Ota, Kola or even Clichy.

I'm questioning inherent bias here, not Kompany.

Not an issue with having a disagreement at who is the better passer, that's opinions. The rest is speculation though

Spot on!

Love Vinny to bits and just wish we had him fit all season. A fit Vinny and we would be up there with Chelsea looking to win the Premiership.

Just hope he can lead us out at Wembley and hold that trophy aloft after the game.

Otamendi not fit to lace Kompany's boots

After rewatching the game, indeed he was brilliant most of the time and the fact that he so easily distributed those balls from Chelsea first time was a lovely sight. And he's still the best battler of a CB in this team.

Just imagine a fully fit and sharp Vinny starting every week! I'm intrigued to see what Pep will do with him, obviously a fully fit kompany starts every week but I don't think he'll ever be close to that
