What Kompany did with a depleted squad to storm that league was exceptional. Given limited funds he chose to stick with his playing style in the PL which maybe was naive but the alternative would have been to turn into a Sheffield united and grind out some draws, but still be relegated. Whether he deserved the job is another question but they saw his style and what he could do with technically inferior players and took a punt.

Managing City or anyone else to success in the PL or CL is a very different challenge.
In one you have to win 90 points to be in contention.
In the other you need good fortune and (usually) a very good team.
Vinyl remains an unknown quality as a manager and I doubt that City will take any risks now or in the future.
