The main issue for me in the USA game was Rice being unable or unwilling to take the ball under any kind of pressure off Stones or Maguire, it slowed the build up play down. I was surprised how poor he was, Phillips is far more able to either play in the half turn or lay the ball off first time. So Phillips in for Mount, Bellingham further forward, walker in for Shaw, swap trippier over and Grealish and Foden either side of Kane.

A good excuse to continue to play a low risk, mundane system and give Phil a few minutes if the game is already won. Ie. when we play the teams that we are supposed to beat.

I was a bit gutted to be missing this one due to work but not overly bothered now

Although I guess if Southgate plays some other players, they will be wanting to impress. So could be a decent performance but seeing as were as good as qualified unless there’s a freak result, I think it’ll be played safe just to ensure it.

He just makes a things up, even though it contradicts his other choices

Saying Foden can’t play in certain positions. Well Pep says Foden can play 5 positions and he’s forgotten more about Football than Gareth will ever know.

Now he’s treating Foden like a kid, yet Bellingham has far less experience at every level

Like when he said he didn’t pick Tammy Abraham he because of form. I have no problem with that, but then how can you justify Maguire, or even Philips who has barely kicked a ball in months . If I was Abraham and Gareth Southgate was sat there in a press conference, telling the world I wasn’t picked because of my form, and then a week later he is sat in a press conference next to Harry Maguire, I’d be fuming. Whether you agree with the selections or not, it’s just so contradictory.

And I don’t even think they are calculated excuses, I think he’s just clueless
