Watford (H) Post Match Thread

Seen MOTD now -and first goal should have been given as offside - However subjective the interpretation is - Sterling is active and what is the defender supposed to do - just let it run and trust the officials? - that's not realistic. I would be annoyed if that was given against us - so have to be relieved it was given for us - but would have no complaints if it wasn't.

Feel the same, just as I did with the PSG handball call - poor interpretation of the rules in both cases but I guess without VAR the Sterling goal was harder to get right

But it wasn't the turning point for the match - Watford were never going to be able to keep holding out for another 45 minutes. It might have made the ending a little more nervy - but I doubt it. sadly the controversy takes away the focus from another dominant display Sterling came up with the goals but another wonderful centre forward display from Sergio - always dangerous, always available for the pass, worked so hard.

Every single word here correct. However, what started to get on my nerves was the way the post match interviews and analyses insisted on spinning it as though the first goal was a major turning point and the result would otherwise have been different. In fact, I got so pissed off that I turned it off.

Bit lethargic in the first half, but we did the business after the break.

Yes, the first goal was a bit controversial, but it’s about time we had a dodgy decision go our way.

Raheem's footwork for the third was phenomenal. The lad keeps getting better and better.

It was also good to see Merlin showing sings of returning to his best form, and that can only augur well for the rest of the season. The pass to Raheem for the third had "goal" written all over it.

Come on Burnley!

Well said.

As Mrs Vienna and I discussed, had the goal not been allowed, we would have continued to attack, and Watford would have carried on defending and I doubt we would have seen the substitutions that Gracia made were the match closer at that point.

It is an easy argument. But we had created several chances before that so it was unlikely that Watford would have held out. It was a turning point though and we did get lucky. Liverpool have had more than their fair share though. We scored a perfectly good goal at Newcastle to go 2 up. But the ref decided he wanted Newcastle to have time to get into position. Why were we penalised when it was our free kick? De Bruyne was booked too and then had to be substituted to avoid a second yellow when things got feisty. He comes off and we fall apart.

But people only focus on the ones that go for us. A good win in the end and pressure back on the dippers. Windy conditions too...Klopp already has his excuse.

Really tickles me the way people on here refer to the other half as “Mrs etc.” Think of some of the other user names. The mind boggles. Mrs Tolmie's Hairdoo?! Mrs gordondaviesmoustache !!??

First goal is interesting, spoke this over with a referee last night and he said goal should stand,

Reason being,

If you replace the defender with another city attacker who was onside from aguero pass and he
nips in front of sterling as defender did & scores, the goal would stand as that player was in an
onside position from aguero pass, ref would deem any movement by sterling as inactive in phase.
[eg a direct shot by this onside attacker and it's not touched by sterling at any time in any phase].

He says as defender touch was not a deflection by him from aguero pass but a considered action,
it's now a different phase of play so touch from sterling comes from a defensive player so onside.

Of course, if I had spoken with x3 referees we may have had x1 given the goal, x1 disallowed goal
and the 3rd would probably have given a penalty to United as he usually would have done...

It seems to me that Raz is starting to play the ball even before the defender gets to it. Therefore I don't see how he can be interpreted as doing anything other than interfering with play. I thought that was the benchmark?
