West Brom (h) post-match thread

Like your post.
But in cancelo,s defence hes trying to do sterlings job as well as his own.
He needs to be full back and winger in one as "raz the daz" fucks off to positions he knows he can,t receive the ball.
But yes I agree on much
I can see what you're saying @Kippax77 and you don't play for Juventus and Portugal if you're a bad player. I think there's definitely something in what you say in that he's trying to do two jobs at once.

I just don't see him ever replacing Walker in our first 11 and he's not a left back. If we can get back our money (well, most of it) then for me, I'd sell the lad tomorrow and put it towards someone else (Auoar? Zakaria?) who'd benefit the team.

Its been so slow for a long time now and that was another borefest. I get teams will and have parked the bus and counter because that seems to be the only solution to counter us. Our problem is when we break their counter, we move the ball around too much in midfield and you can watch all the opposition running back to having 11 in their half. Classic was in the 2nd half, love Foden but we broke after a counter. Foden took the ball out with maybe 5 of their in our half. Foden slowed down then passed sideways who then passed backwards in which i saw all WBA team run back into their half. We aren't doing things attacking wise quickly enough, are we too reserved now because of a counter?

I’ve criticised KDB a lot as his performances have dropped massively but “what’s he done?” He fucking put one right on Sterling’s head, 3 yards out and he once against fluffed his lines in a big
moment for us.

Lyon was much worse but fucking hell, tonight was bad, he’s a forward for us ffs.

Kev has been just as bad as Sterling. He has looked positively awful at times and gets given a free ride by a lot our fans. That said those two are easily our best attacking players and two of the best in Europe. They have looked absolutely average this season as has everyone in an attacking sense. It’s our approach more than players form.. we are set up worlds apart from the way we were 24 months ago.

Just for a bit of context for tonights game, WBA have the worst defence in the league having conceeded 26 goals in 13 games.

They've only scored 10 goals in 13 games, just 8 less than us.

Shocking.

Even when opposition do get bodies ahead of the ball, we calm possession down, stroke it around the half way line and kindly wait for them to get their shape back
So tired of this exact thing. The obsession with pointless control and “stability” has suffocated our ability to confuse defenses. And I think the style frustrates the hell out of the players. They really don’t seem to enjoy it. No flow, no joy, very little creativity and expression.

It's good that this season has shown who was actually carrying the attack in this team. Silva left, Kun injured and Kev, the poor bastard, is carrying the attack while Sterling, Jesus and Mahrez sit around with their thumbs up their arses, angling for one last pay rise. Absolute bastard finishing. 2.81 xG and 1 goal. FUCK ME.

That was a truly dreadful game of football between two poor teams. The spark has gone out of our side and the magic is no longer there.

I personally would like to see Mendy shipped out in January along with his stupid hairstyle. Rodri and Cancelo can warm the bench, play Walker and Ake as fullbacks, Fernandinho for Rodri and go with Torres, Stirling and Mahrez up top.

Ederson, Walker, Dias, Stones (Laporte), Ake, Fernandinho, Gundogan, de Bruyne, Mahrez, Stirling, Torres.

Seriously what has happened with Bernardo. The only one we have who could aspire to fill some of the gap left by David. I wish I knew what was happening. So much wrong tonight so no point me repeating what many have written. Just an enormous sense of frustration because even though we can see the problems we should still have had way too much for Albion. Lets be honest with even moderate finishing we should have walked away with 3 or 4 and thats before I get started, as I said I wouldn't, on laboured passing, inability to beat men, unwillingness to take a dig from outside the box v WBA for god's sake. Still think we got a favourable draw in the Chumps League, not on that performance.

Too many touches. Everytime we get into a good position and a nice pass is thread through I know whoever recieves it is going to take at least one too many touches. It took until Sergio came on to put a stop to that tonight.

On the phone to Madrid tomorrow. Straight swap Hazard for Sterling. One convincing performance this season 5-0 Burnley. No Sterling. Put the faith in Torres.

Problem with that team is that it is still an poor front 3 and a midfield (bar KDB) who don’t create or dictate games

Agree with the jammy goal. I'd say more horrendous finishing than point blank saves, Both straight at him. Sterling more so than Gundogan. Shocking finishing.

I'd actually trust Sterling around my missus, No doubt he'd put it in the wrong hole.
That's the thing though, it's not a Jammy goal. No free kick no goal. Drives me mad this sort of thing, the last thing you do is give a team that comes to defend the chance to get the ball in the box. Their whole training would have been about taking that 1 chance from a set piece and we gave it to them.
It happens all the time against us and its just lazy defending in giving away a foul!

I honestly don't know where we go from here. We have thought a couple of times we may have turned the corner but we haven't. I'm discounting the 5-0 against Burnley as they had four or five players missing and a rookie keeper in nets.

Unfortunately for us our recent big money signings have underwhelmed. I'm adding Mendy and Bernardo to that list too as both have been disappointing, Bernardo one good season in almost four as it stands and Mendy has been injured half of his time here. I think one of the biggest mistakes has been Rodri. He will probably be a great player in another team and system but not ours. I think a lot of our stagnation now stems from Pep having to adapt the team to accommodate him. He realises he's not quick or mobile enough to protect the defence like Fern was so he's had to curtail our attacking style to stop us getting picked off all the time on the counter. How whoever scouted him didn't see this I have no idea.

Merlin is a massive miss. He was Mr reliable, the never dropping below a seven player. Perpetual motion, knitting everything together, twisting, turning, keeping possession and opening defences with his movement and vision. The heartbeat of the side. Up front no Aguero and we drop at least 50% in goal threat and fear to the opposition.

In Foden and Torres we have promise but is that promise going to turn into genuine world class players? We just don't know.

We suffered for quite a while from not adding another centre half and now the not adding another genuine goal scoring forward is biting us hard in the arse.

This season if we win a cup and scrape top four I will be satisfied on the evidence of what I have seen so far. For me though a ruthless purge of this squad is needed in the summer but it is crucial we get the right players in this time.
