West Ham (H) - Post-Match Thread

I went on the match day thread yesterday and I thought Sterling must have been particularly bad given the abuse and vilification that he was getting. I watched the game this morning to see for myself , I think he played well. Given the amount of goals and trophies he has scored \won with the club does he not deserve our respect? In addition I listened to the game on 5 live yesterday. I got the impression that West Ham were the best team in the first half , which turned out to be the exact opposite. The commentators are supposed to describe the game not follow their own agenda. Rubbish from the BBC

It was very easy to get that impression. But in fairness I watched it on SFR/RMC (French tv), only problem was they were hopping back and forth trying to cover all matches on at the same time. I muted the sound (because I can't stand the ignorance of French football commentators on English football), and opened up Radio Manchester for the commentary. The combination of the two sources, along with the OS Matchday feed, did give the impression that West Ham were quite a threat in the first half. Haven't got round to watching City+ yet. Will settle down to that with a drink in the very near future.
But you know, it's a funny thing. I was actually at the home match against Leicester in 2016. The other day, for the very first time since then, I watched the highlights on the OS. Now by their very nature, highlights try to make your own team look as good as possible. But there is simply no way of finessing it — Leicester were all over us in that match. They could easily have scored four or five. But that's not the way I remembered it, or even the way I saw it at the time.

16th January 1965 v Swindon Town. A magnificent crowd of 8,015 were there, myself included. Their winning goal was scored by a certain Michael George Summerbee.
Was there too with The Old Man, in front of the scoreboard in the freezing, pi**ing rain, cursing my cousin Keith (now sadly departed) in the warmth and luxury of the Platt Lane seats (?!) with Uncle Sam. Still got my programme to this day! And little did we know that on that day we'd 'seen the future, Max'.. in the shape of said Michael George Summerbee! Eeee, 'appy days!

You must be a young man then we had a few 8,000 gates also under 20,000 gates 63/64 season all League games.

That's right. We were pretty awful in those days. I was only a young lad then but I do remember there was always plenty of room on the scoreboard end terraces. City were going downhill fast and when Joe Mercer was appointed it was a last throw of the dice which turned out to be a master stroke.

Think i read that not only was the weather horrific , there was a bus strike too?
(And obviously most used to get the bus)
Sterling more likely to catch the Tube..mind the gap, which perhaps happens more than one would wish. Until/if he goes and plays in Blue I will support him. He has been great for City..give the lad a break.

Getting back to West Ham you have to praise the brilliant tactics used by the manager. Perfect organization, flowing movements one side of the pitch to the other. Perfect timing to avoid delays. Not forgetting the use of the sweeper system. The game, nah, Clearin' the pitch of snow at Half Time!!!!!

But I thought we regularly got 30,000 plus even when we got relegated twice. That 8,000 crowd must have been exceptional. I certainly don't remember it.

It was January 1965 in Division 2 at home to Swindon and we lost 1-2 with 8,015 in attendance. It would have been fewer had I not attended !!!

Oooops …. just seen the other responses … forgot it was my first glimpse of Mike Summerbee … happy days!

One thing that worried me was how missing our chances and not making the most of our dominance could have once again cost us points. I know Fern scored in the 90th minute to make it 2-0 and the above didn't happen. How gutting would it have been though if he hadn't and with the last kick that Lanzini goal made it 1-1. We need a clinical world class striker asap.

I think this is more of an issue in the big Champs League games against the likes of Bayern Liverpool or Chelsea when things are tight.
Against West Ham if we’d not scored the second I think we would have seen the game out differently and totally closed it down
