West Ham - post match thread

Sadly too, it's not even a legitimate criticism

Just how short is your memory ? when MP put him between the sticks for the league cup final half our supporters thought about putting a few quid on puddle to win.
Caballero is not a good keeper, below the standard of every other keeper in the premier imho, the fact he is willing to play how pep wants him to suit the system will not change that or make up for the lack of talent when it matters.

Yes every keeper can make a balls up of them now and again, but willie has never shown anything but blind panic on high crosses into the area.

Before he came to us he was a very good keeper. Had a serious dip in form and confidence when he got the odd game for us, but finally proved himself in the final and has been good ever since.
That was an excellent cross yesterday. Dip, pace and bend on it.

Willie is a competent keeper but not of the required standard we need to be able to compete with Barca etc.
I don't think West ham goal was his fault although he doesn't seem over confident on crosses.
As the cross was very deep to the back post most keepers would struggle to reach it unless they were 6ft 6ish.
Cant believe that motd didn't highlight Silvas pas over the head of west ham player in 1st half...it was sublime and if it had been Xavi Iniesta or Messi they would have it on a fucking loop.

One of those rares games that I couldn't watch, in some form, as it happened. Having seen some post match Tweets, the second half turned out not to be quite the "horror show" I had read of. No tension when you watch makes a big difference.

City didn't play the bravura football on the first half but still gave WHU little sight of our goal. City did get a bit nervous after they scored and it is the team's collective and individual mentality that still gives me most cause for concern because there is only so much Pep can do about that. Hopefully though he will continue to have a positive impact on that front and the players will build their belief in their talent and his tactics. I also hope that Pep and his coaches will bring the players' fitness up even further. You can see the progress to date and we have Vinnie and three / four new major signings yet to appear.

Raz deserved his MotM; was pleased to see MotD guys highlight what a clever player Nolito looks to be and to see that they took a more sensible view of the Aguero incident than Sky. Hope the FA are in lenient mode!

After conceding the goal at 2-1 it was nervous for the fans, but WHU didn't exert any more control than before. They had no control at any stage, they were just still in the game because of the scoreline. City just could not finish them off until the final minutes.

Nolito and Silva have formed a very good understanding. We opened them up continually in the opening minutes with the Nolito Silva combo. And as you say still got some very good players to come in. Will be interesting to see how we are lining up in September

Thankfully, I didn't follow the second half (was too busy ensuring my daughters didn't get caught up in all the mayhem Asswipe Rocky caused at Reading Festival) so just got a final score text from Our Kid, to add to his HT report.

Still be interesting to see who stays / goes. I'm one of those that would prefer Nasri to stay.

Re-watched the match on Sky last night. It's amazing how much the nerves of viewing a game live, and the influence of the commentators comments, can affect how you feel a match is going at the time, compared to how it actually went when you get chance to view it back, knowing the result.
The first half was amazing, but we continued playing really well for the first ten minutes of the second half, we then conceded the goal, but then conceded only ONE more half chance, in the rest of the match, and that was at 3-1!
Yes, we lost a little control, and West Ham played slightly better, but we still dominated, played a handful of sloppy passes and looked slightly more hesitant, but continued to look slick for the majority of the time, and created about five clear cut chances.
If it wasn't for the almost flawless first half, the second half would have appeared excellent. However the commentators, at different points in the second half, described us as "wilting", and "coming apart at the seams"! You'd think we'd crumbled, and West Ham were all over us. The pundits in the studio continued this theme, without being able to show anything but City highlights (and the Aguero incident).
I guess Sky feel they have to keep the drama cranked up to the max, but it was amazing watching it back, how much a slight dip in our play, and a moderately better West Ham performance, created such a huge shift in the reporting of the match, and consequently must have influenced my nerves/frustration while watching live!

We had a spare ticket yesterday and a mate of mine came. He's not a blue but has played football all his life. He's probably a Villa fan if anyone but just enjoys football and hates United so he's cool by me.

After the game we were saying how nervy we were and were not convinced we'd hold on as they were getting plenty of joy.
He pissed himself and said he thought we could score at any minute and West Ham were lucky to only lose 3-1.

He's not a blue, knows football so just sees things as they are, he thought we were exceptional. We may have a convert. One less "empty seat"...

I'm normally a pessimist, but I'm trying very hard not to get carried away at the moment. I keep telling myself, early days, early days. However, if I were a Scouser, I'd at least have written a poem by now.

Hello all, just signed up to say thank you for the reception from your fans yesterday. I've had nothing but positive experiences with City supporters over the years and I lost count of the amount of supporters that wished us a safe journey home yesterday.

Wishing you all the best this season, you have a hell of a team (WHU fan).

Well done and thanks for that. Hope you have a good season, get Caroll back fit and enjoy your first season at the Olympic stadium.

Same cup final he saved all those penaltiesand won the cup for us. Ffs. You want him to make a mistake don't you.....

No I dont, but how about a bit of honesty from you and a few more on here about Caballero`s contributions during his City career, "Saved a few penalties" is the only summation you could give, ever walked away from a game he played in talking about a top flight save ?, kept us in the game ?, or shall we play the honesty game and admit the best he ever raised was "Did alright".

Stoke away he made a good save when it was one nil. I only want my goalkeeper to do alright as if he is having to make fantastic saves all the time and be really busy then we have a problem as a team.

That's the problem with some City fans. They are never satisfied. We are all sometimes overly critical.
But you talk to most fans of other teams (except rags) and outside the internet world of "banter", they
mainly say how lucky we are to be watching this standard of football. Obviously there are still a lot
of bitters, who spout the old "oil money" shite.

Well he has been sub most games so it's a bit difficult. He has been a professional number 2 for us. We have signed bravo cos willie is a number 2 for us. Bravo is number 1 and Willie number 2 . He won't moan and will get on with it and and we need him he will come in and get on with it as always. What more can you ask from your number 2? he did nothing wrong yesterday. Nothing.

I don't think it is that so much as the fact that we have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory so many times over the years that it is an ingrained part of being a City fan for those of us in our second half century! "Typical City" is not something that was made up for nothing.

At half time, I said to my brother that we were doing what we always seem to do....boss the game, get a goal or two, but miss untold chances to put the game away. I also told him, if they get a goal (most likely corner or dead ball, because they were a big team playing a small team!) it will turn into squeaky bum time, because the fans will get restless and there will be a push push push for a third, which might leave us exposed.

It is these repeated experiences that have "tainted" some of us from that 100% blind belief that everything will turn out fine.

That said, we played some lovely stuff and it really did feel like we were about to score for long periods of the game. The problem is, and always has been, that if we do NOT get the goal, it is "Typical City" to let one in and it would have all been for nought.

Clearly, there is an energy and mentality to Pep that he insists upon in his players. Nolito, a strange buy at first blush, typifies it: he never stops working, even though he is a forward! What this team MIGHT BE (once everyone is fit and healthy) is scary to behold. To think that Kompany, Sane, Gundogan and maybe even a fit Nasri could be added to this current team has to strike fear into any and all opposition.

My biggest concerns are:

1) Pep will not rotate as needed for the loooong season, (IMHO, Silva and KDB could do with a rest already given the summer, preseason, and start they have had) and we will have a spate of fatigue muscle injuries (Hammies and calves) in the new year, and

2) We are too small. I would like to see a little more height in the team, especially going forward. Kolarov appears to have grown 3 inches in the summer, as I've never seen him win so many balls in the air, but beyond our CH's, I don't see enough height in the team. Fernandinho can jump, but is not a big lad, but our full backs are short, our midfield is short and our forward line is tiny. I know it is not Pep's game to just knock Expactations a ball into the mix and have lads fight for it, but it needs to be a viable option late in games, where getting the ball wide and knocking it in leads to goals almost every week.

3) Expectations for this season have risen exponentially due to flashes of brilliance we have seen thus far. I hope we are in the mix for everything this season, and think we could well have the ability to win trophies. However, it appears that EVERYONE thinks Pep is only here to win the CL, and that anything less is a disaster. I would suggest that is nonsense, and his job is really a 2-3 year revolution to produce a CLUB where the mentality is as stated above, and that ethos permeates all levels of the club, with younger players coming through and the First Team Squad adding only 1 or 2 players every year to refresh, reinvigorate and improve.

I hope we are all ready for the ride of our lives, but I also hope we won't be too disappointed if we don't win every match, lose to a bad team once in a while, or don't win every trophy. It feels like after this start and these kinds of performances, even the pundits are expecting us to win it all! That is just not "Typical City".......yet!
