West Ham United (A) | Sun 7th Aug | Post Match Thread

After letting them have the first 2 minutes it was a very controlled performance from us. Think the heat played a factor but West Ham didn't even try and close us down and that played right into our hands. Haaland's explosive sprints really take the eye and the goals will rightly earn him the plaudits. Nice not to be too worried that we're gonna miss a penalty for a change. A good day all round with the Striking Viking getting off the mark, an assist for KDB and a clean sheet to boot.

That league debut was very very impressive from Haaland. There was immense pressure on him with that penalty. The hostile crowd were booing him big time, and having not seen much of the ball - on the back of missing 3 chances last week against Liverpool, and tons of media hype - he coolly placed that ball perfectly into the side netting.
The way he took his second was sublime.
As he looks like being the new penalty taker, I expect a new premier league goal scoring record from him within the next few years.
We strolled to a comfortable victory in a match we feared could have gone the wrong way, and to be 2 points above the mickeys after 1 game is a great start to the season. I expect us to fill our boots in the next few games.
Credit to all the players for never stopping after a very shaky first 3 minutes.
Credit to Pep for another selection, which worked perfectly - I can never second guess him.
Lastly, I will just say that, if Sterling or Jesus had either taken the penalty or had that Haaland chance for the second goal, I doubt that they would have scored both of them - that's the difference we've acquired with Haaland, with all respect for Sterling and Jesus, who both scored plenty for us over the years.
Haaland will get better as he gets fitter and more used to us, but, he looks very, very hungry for goals and success.
He seems a merciless giant.

It's one of the toughest grounds to go to and get a result and we breezed it today against what's normally a well drilled West Ham side.

We got sloppy at times in the game but that was purely down to finding the game to easy we were in total control of the entire game.

For opposition players it's a fucking disaster playing agaisnt this side, Constantly chasing and chasing the ball we are near impossible to play against when we are on it.
One of the toughest places? Statistically you may be right mate, but my perception has always been the opposite. The distance away the fans are from the pitch, and the low angle of the seating, to me reduces any intimidating feeling quite a lot.

Absolutely brilliant start to the season that.

West Ham are no mugs but they just had no idea how to contain us and in all fairness, we rarely broke sweat we were that good. I don't think it would've mattered what they did today, we were simply too good.

Of course, the headlines tomorrow will be about Haaland and they will be fully deserved, he was absolutely brilliant and showed what we've lacked for the last few years. Winning the penalty was brilliant play, the penalty was class and we should finally have someone who doesn't choke on them! The second goal was pure brilliance - West Ham couldn't catch him even if Antonio was back defending and the finish was class. It wasn't only the goals though, his general play was superb. He's a brilliant footballer and once KdB/Gungodan/Foden/Mahrez etc get to grips with him he's going to break records.

Rodri was insanely good wasn't he? Seriously, he is the best defensive midfielder in the world. I've said it a million times but he never makes a bad pass and is always available for the ball.

Overall, 0-2 at West Ham will be seen as a fantastic result at the end of the season. It's not a popular view, but Moyes is - outside the top 4 - a great manager. No one will fancy going there this season. Given Liverpool have dropped points against Fulham, this result is even better.

It's going to be a long, hard season but from what I've seen today I think we're really going to enjoy it.

COME ON CITY!!
