I'm a pedant, there are two ends but one surround, so by your nomenclature I'd call an end A crust and the surround The crust.What surrounds the loaf is A crust. The end is THE crust. I always make a beeline for the crust 'cos yer can spread semi-hard butter on it without it ripping to shreds.
