The crust is the outside of the loaf not just the top. I reckon “crust” became standard parlay in the UK to describe the slices with the most crust as opposed to the slices with just edges of crust. Nobody was throwing out any of the bread anyway so “crust” is just shorthand vernacular.

Crust, never heard heel said.

I'm the opposite
Heard the crust being used for the top but the heel always for the 2 ends
Just did a quick survey of 7 people and all said heel.
They are not the most reliable, mind you.
