Which players are no longer good enough?

People are picking their favourites to stay & their whipping boys to go but Pep won't neccesarily agree.

Fernando is on many people's list & they might be right but imo he's been more use to the club this season than Silva for example who has been a handicap rather than an asset in many games. The current version of Silva would need a big improvement in quality & workrate in order to play in a typical Guardiola side. He is not a legend to Pep he is just a bloke taking a shirt from someone else & has to suit the job.

Fernando for all we know, could be seen as a defender by Pep. We just don't know for sure how he will see it.

It's all up in the air imo but some of the fullbacks are likely in trouble. I can't see how Kolarov can survive however he plays due to his obsession with putting the ball on his left foot. It kills all the angles Pep likes so much.

Even if you think Silva has been poor (he has) Fernado hasn't been any better. He's looked half decent the last few games but overall his time here has been disappointing.
That doesn't mean your general point isn't true, it definitely will be the case. I just don't think your example stands up. Not long to wait to find out either way.

I think he's done what we signed him to do for the most part. Wheras Silva this season hasn't. If we asked either to be a midfield General, we would be unfair to either player as neither are equipped for it. But Fernando seems to be expected to be that player & people are disappointed when he isn't. He is just a player to break up play & give the ball to the footballers. Imo he does that but is often doing it in the wrong team.

Those definitely not good enough
Kolarov
Demi
Wilf

Those that have a season with Pep to improve otherwise are gone
Managala (Pep will sort him out, he's still young)
Otamendi (Might not be able to sort him and gone after a season)
Delph (if only used as a DM, has plenty of potential for Pep to work with)
Navas (I think Pep will really improve him!)
Hart (has definitely earned a good season or 2 with Pep)

Keeping for sentimental reasons but used sparingly
Yaya (unless a big offer comes in for him)
Zabs (unlikely to improve but I love him!)

I think Pep will have to have 4 categories of player...

1) Who is inadequate - sell
2) Who is adequate - keep, but actively start looking for upgrades
3) Who is nearing end of life - keep, but actively start scouting for replacements
4) Highly capable, and no need to replace

We have quite a few players in categories 1 & 2 (Ota,Mangala,Clichy,Kolarov,Navas,Bony, Sterling,Nasri,Delph,Fernandinho) - the question is which of those Pep feels he accept in improve and which he can't.
Many of our stalwarts - Kompany, Zab, Silva, Yaya are in category 3.
Arguably only Hart, Aguero and KdB are in category 4

When laid out like this, there's quite a lot of work to be done (or certainly lots of scope for improvement). Hand on heart, most of our players are not at the very high end of European football, they're at the higher end of PL football only, and of those that are high end, they're getting on.

We all debate about the future prospects of younger players like Nacho and Sterling, but if Pep is tasked with winning PL and CL and if here for 3 years, then we have to ask 'are they likely to be CL winning material in the next 2-3 years'?'

I am seriously hoping Pep believes he can coach a lot of players into being significantly better - e.g. Sterling, Delph, Ota, Mangala, Fernando otherwise he's got a hell of a job on his hands, because hand on heart, I think there's only Hart, Aguero and KdB that would pique the interests of Europe's very best teams, and maybe they'd take a punt on Sterling, but I'm not convinced.

He's not good enough, he's half decent at his job, but he's got not creative nous about him. Waste of a player and I hope he's the first out the door. Silva on the other hand can pass the ball with a meaning, although he's had an off year, he's still got a high number of assists.

I dont think we need big changes tbh, it isnt championship manager, we cant just swap half of the team out and bring a load of new faces in, there are relationships and friendships, all of which can upset the team spirit, it will be done slowly.....

Bony - Deffo
Kolarov -
Yaya - Maybe, not sure
Fernando

Bring in:
Strong b2b midfielder
Another top class striker

The reason Silva has been poor is that he has been playing in pain through an injury. We could have used Kelechi as a link up player behind Sergio or Manu Garcia as well to fill in. It's driven me up the wall that Pellegrini distrusts youth to the degree that he would rather have poor displays from Silva and injure his long term health rather than give some very talented kids a chance. Our youth policy under Pellegrini has been criminal

Fernando will stay, he has been very good in in UCL and would be a good squad player

Out

Bony
Toure
Demi
Zabaleta
Kolorov
Nasri
Willy ( i would keep him for a season as we have more important position to fill at the moment)
Ihenacho might go out on loan i think, just a feeling
navas
Delph 50/50

Depends how you look at it. You're right, it's not video game and it's not really feasible to swap out half the team in the blink of an eye, but at the same time, we have be honest with our own appraisal of where we are at, and who is in decline... with a 3 year plan. 3 years is not that long to try and become CL winners and an established contender amongst Bayern, Barca and Madrid. We're not even dominating our own league yet!

If we were to bring in 3 players this summer, 1 in January and another 3 for following summer - that's 7 players in 14 months. I think the changes in the team will be quite rapid - after all, he's only got 3 years (that we know of so far)
