Why we're better than Spurs...

Manchester United Fan in Peace - again just posting small points, you guys have some good discussions going on in your boards. Hope you don't mind me joining in every once in a while when there's not much going on in United's forums? Not much to talk about at the moment there (no arrogance intended) lol

I think comparing yourselves to Spurs is a bit of a tricky one tbh. Spurs have great coaching staff, stability and a team that has been built up slowly over years. Due to the way you're expanding quite rapidly, your team hasn't really developed much of a core apart from Carlos Tevez - all other players are constantly in and out, with players being sold within 2 seasons of joining the team. It makes it hard for your players to have a great understanding of each other.

Spurs has taken a while to build up but I do have to admit, even for me, I love watching them in the Champions League. Offensively they are one of the best sides in Europe with a midfield which I think is definitely one of the top three in the Premier League. Van der Vaart, Modric, Kranjcar, Bale, Lennon, Palacios, Sandro, Huddlestone...there is so much variation Redknapp can change things how he wishes. Even I at times envy their squad selection, although ours is very, very strong as well.

They lack a hardcore finisher though. Crouch is good but he is pretty much a one-trick pony and Defoe isn't consistent at all. Pav is good, however again lacks consistency.

You guys have your good points - on your day you can play really well. You have excellent ball holders you just have something missing in your team, hard to think of exactly what that is. Today you were admittedly not very creative or inspirational, but you still have a stronger squad.

That said, I've managed to convince myself that Spurs are a better team throughout this thread lol however maybe you guys just need to develop or purchase some youth players who'll bring qualities that aren't available on the market. That's what Tottenham have done, working for them at the moment...

Spot on Red.

a couple of good results and suddenly they are up there with barca.

football fans have the attention span of a goldfish.

it's swings and roundabouts. our technical tactical style wins a few, then they win a few by running really fast. even before our best run this season their boards were convinced that our ability to keep a clean sheet and control games put us miles ahead of them this season. now some of us crave their ability to relentlessky attack at pace. the reality is that we are chalk and cheese. you can only pursue one philosophy at a time. we need to improve or execution rather than give in to self-doubt.

not that the OP made much sense to me but there aren't words to describe how much I hate seeing City fans fawn over the enemy.

i hate spurs but i'm grateful in a way. they've created a genuine tension. can they pick up more wins, even beat Arsenal? how will we respond? it's a genuine challenge, and we will learn more about our team and manager, than if we'd been allowed to sleepwalk into third position. i can't wait for the next couple of months, can't wait to play them.

2 players would improve us immeasurably and have us challenging properly for the league.
-Chiellini fits the bill of a CB "Destroyer"
-Gerrard fits the bill of a CM with some extra attacking threat/creativity aswell as having the ability to quickly switch the direction of attack. We currently have plenty of players decent at short triangles but relying on only that slows down the attack too often. We waste too much time playing little triangles infront of our own defence.

"But where's De Jong?" I love Nige but he's not needed for a lot of games.
"But Gerrard is getting on now!" yea, so?

We don't need loads of changes. A few tweaks and Spurs wouldn't even figure in our minds.
Granted, we have to make damn sure we get CL this season.

We are better than spurs because we are better than them at almost every position. yes they are more cohesive, but if you combined the teams, bale, dawson, and modric would be the only starters imo. would you start vdv over tevez? no..

ps - if we did have those three players we would be AWESOME

IMO the only way you'll be able to categorically tell if you're better than them is by finishing above them over 38 games.

Any other type of argument just descends into "my dad is bigger than your dad" etc.

indeed. At the moment they're playing better than us, but people already writing us off and banking Spurs will get 3 points at ours, 2 months to the day and about 11-13 games away, is insane.

I'd also have lennon, VDV and Assou Ekotto in a heart beat and i wouldnt say no to Kranjar and Huddlestone either.

Just a few points:

1. Spurs have better defensive option than us. They have Dawson, Woodgate, King, Bassong, Gallas. We have Kompany (excellent) but K.Toure, Lescott, Boateng.

2. They have an attacking midfield Bale, Lennon, Modric, VDV, Kranjcar, Pinnear. We have a defensive midfield De Jong, Milner, Barry, YaYa Toure. This underlined by the fact that although Spurs don't have World class strikers like us, they have no problems scoring goals, especially in Europe. Did you all know Arsenal and Tottenham are the joint top scorers in the Champions League? Ahead of Man U, Barca Real Madrid, Chelsea etc.

3. We have fantastic individuals but they're a team. Simple.

4. It's hard to accept but Redknapp is a better manager, no question. Mancini has won things in Italy, (although in tainted circumstances) but he is Italian in style and outlook. This cannot be denied any longer. Looking at Serie A makes me wonder why Italian coaches seem to be regarded so highly in England (Ancellotti, Mancini, Capello)????? Ancelotti might've won the Double but that was Mourinho's team and now it's coming to the end of its shelf life and having to be rebuilt Chelsea are struggling.

To elaborate on point 4 Redknapp has faced squad problems just like Mancini has. Having to leave out players etc, but you don't hear of training ground bust ups and negative leaks and constant want aways. VDV has gone so far as to say Redknapp has made him rediscover his love for football after a confidence sapping time at Real Madrid. 2nite when VDV was substituted he was walking on the touchline with his arms round Redknapp talking and smiling, happy. This from a player who reacted angrily to Holland coach Bert Van Marwijk when subbed in a friendly a few months back. Basically man management is a big part of the game and should not be underestimated.

Lastly I'm actually pleased for Redknapp, he's English and going toe to toe at the highest level in Football, and successfully fighting Tottenham's corner, which is a very rare thing. Lets just hope he fcuk's off to England job soon!!!!

The reason why we are NOT better than Spurs is simply down to the coaching staff and team management. The quality of players is roughly the same but Harry and his boys seem to know how to get the best out of his team, especially when going forward. Our play is too slow and predictable. Let's hope that it changes soon before it's too late. Right now, Spurs and Arsenal are the best teams in the land.

haha we dont need Nig so how come every time he doesnt play we look a worse team?

Even at home when missing against crap teams like Brum we miss him. Second name on the team sheet for me after Tevez shortly followed by Kompany.
