Wilfried Bony

They've loaned Nelson Oliveira off Benfica, but I wouldn't expect that to mean anything for Bony, other than cover for him being away at ACON. Oliveira is pretty much a failed prospect looking to rebuild his career, I'd be surprised if he gets much gametime at Swansea as he simply isn't very good.

Of course they'll need cover, but Bony will be missing for like approximately a month, and they already have Emnes and Gomis, and then a youngster, Donelly. They only play 1 striker, so not sure how much they would need another striker...

City make enquiries but striker could command £30m transfer fee in January

Manchester City approach Swansea over £30m Wilfried Bony

January spending: Wilfried Bony could cost City up to £50million in transfer fees and wages

Manchester City have made enquiries about signing striker Wilfried Bony from Swansea City as they look at options to increase their firepower.

However, City face having to spend around £50million in transfer fee and wages if they decide to follow up their interest in Bony after Swansea took the release clause out of the Ivory Coast international’s contract. There was a £19m release clause in Bony’s initial Swansea contract, but that was removed when his new deal, which runs to 2018, was signed in November, allowing the Welsh club to name their price for the 26-year-old.

The move was a masterstroke by Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins, who does not have to fear being backed into a corner by City or any other club over Bony.

With West Bromwich Albion valuing Saido Berahino at more than £20m, Swansea would demand around £30m for Bony in January and the player would expect to be handed a minimum four-year contract worth £5m per year. With such big figures involved, it remains to be seen whether City maintain a strong interest in signing Bony this month – particularly as the player will go to the African Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast.

Txiki Begiristain, City's director of football, was in the Anfield stands to watch Bony play for Swansea against Liverpool on Monday night and the club have made discreet enquiries over his potential availability. Bony is one of a handful of top strikers whom a club the size of City might be able to sign in January and would be eligible to play for the club in the Champions League when the knockout stages start in February.

Although he is happy at the Liberty Stadium, it is believed Bony is keen to eventually test himself at the top level and play Champions League football. Injuries to Sergio Agüero, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic have forced City to play without a recognised striker for their last three Premier League games.

City manager Manuel Pellegrini has already admitted that he may be forced into the January transfer market to find a new striker and Bony is one of a clutch of players the club are considering.

“I never close the possibility of any business in the transfer window if we can do anything to give us an advantage,” said Pellegrini. “If all the teams can do it, we can do it also.

“We will analyse what we are going to do. There were a lot of decisions why we loaned Álvaro Negredo to Valencia, one of them being that he was injured and couldn't play until the middle of November. That left us only six weeks before the window opened.

“In January we will see if we need to replace him or not. Now we are in that moment we are going to make the best decision for the club.”

Swansea signed Bony for a club record £12m in July 2013 and the player has scored 32 goals in 62 appearances for the Welsh club.

Ouch! The only positives he will be available for the Champions League and he might not have too much trouble getting used to our playing style.

Surely there is better out there for that amount or are we constraining ourselves to buying home grown?

I must admit this one is a bit of a head scratcher. He has impressed me but not at that price.

Yep. £30m too much. Value for money is key under FFP shit era.

Chelsea paid £32m for Costa, so £30m for Bony would be daylight robbery.
