Winning silverware: Does it matter?

Of course they do. They're the stamp that seals the seasons achievements, making sure they will be remembered in the history books for years to come (and as we don't have any history, we need to start racking some up pronto).

What I will say though, is it doesn't advocate the use of win at all costs tactics and dull football. You still watch a team playing in the league far longer than them winning it. Soriano has it spot on, entertaining football is the game. Winning trophies should be the byproduct of it.

We need to win silverware, but if we play the football we are and win nothing then I won't be disappointed. We have been in transition this season, and the team have adjusted to a new style of football with a new manager and also integrated four new players as well as rejuvenating several others. I expect us to win at least one trophy from where we are this season, but we could still win 3 or 4. In the next three seasons if we keep improving then we'll win much more silverware and with this type of football we are playing as well. The future's very bright for our club.

If you look back at last season, could you have imagined that we would ever be in a position to become FA Cup Runners Up and PL Runners Up in one season, after years of struggle ?
We were beside ourselves if we are being honest, even as we once again went into that Promised Land of milk and honey,The Champions League.Have we been spoilt, from all those years of hurt and misery, when in two fantastic seasons we managed to win three trophies.
For me yes,we need a bit of silverware and lets be realistic, the Capital One Cup is there for the taking, the PL could be ours if we can continue in this rich vein of form. The FA Cup is always a lottery, but shouldn`t be out of our reach, however for me the CL is a little too much IMO for this year.Yes I know that Chelsea somehow won it a couple of years ago,but they rode their luck continually and that was a very fortuitous year for them.
One trophy and I`ll be happy. Two and I`ll be delighted.Three and I`ll be delirious !! Four !!! Well fuck knows how I`d feel, but I have a feeling that Mrs Palmer and her four daughters would be working overtime for many a long month.
Yes we need trophies, irrespective of our performances.

Perhaps I didn't phrase the question properly. What I meant was, does it matter to YOU.

I can see it matters to the club. We need a strong and growing worldwide (plastic) fan base, to whom supporting a winning team is doubtless very important. And there's a bunch of other reasons too. I am sure. But what about you?

And of course I'd *like* us to win trophies. But I just don't seem to be so hung up on it like I used to be. Maybe it's because after waiting for so many years and now we have had success, I dont yearn for it so much. I get as much enjoyment from seeing us batter the rags as I would from say winning the FA Cup again. Probably more, actually.

For me, now that we've broken our trophy barren spell, I'd rather see us play really expansive attacking football where we are getting better and better, than grinding out dour 1-0 wins and hoping teams don't shut up shop against us… in time, that style will deliver more fantastic memories of big wins, its fair share of trophies, and attract better and better players. I started supporting City from a family of Leeds supporters in the late 60s / early 70s in part because I watched Bremner et al kick the crap out of opponents while Bell, Summerbee et al played football.

For me and most members of my generation (40yr olds) winning is the only thing that matters.

Rolls of honour don't say how trophies are won, just who the winners are.

One oft repeated fallacy that's become almost part of the sporting zeitgeist is that sport is part of the entertainment industry. That is only true in so much as people are prepared to pay to watch it but it differs from other entertainment forms in one crucial aspect - the raison d'etre of sport is the competititive aspect. Whatever sport is played, the participants first and foremost want to win regardless of whether anybody turns up to watch and be entertained. They would still play with the same ferocity and desire to win if nobody turned up to watch it. The FA Cup final or the WBC Middleweight title fight would still take place if nobody was prepared to pay to watch it. We pay to watch sport because we want to see who wins - the sublime skills and wonderful athleticism on show are enjoyable by products of that but it's the winning that counts.

one is the variable of the other.

win all 38 games is a guaranteed silverware, the less wins the less the chance.

having said that, yes and yes and yes and yes.
