with the CL draw almost upon us

The seeding is ridiculous, but in a curious way it's got some of the groups spot on. I think most would argue that Bayern and City are the two who belong in the last 16 from our group if last season's form is anything to go off, and that -oops! - Dortmund and Napoli from Arsenal's group as Arsenal seem the real pot three team there. We start off with the best team in Europe at home, and it is quite important to get off to a good start, so that could have been better, then we're away in Moscow on the 23 October. At least it's not likely to be too far below zero so hopefully.... Then we have three reasonable nights, so a point in Moscow and it should be job done. The only problem if it isn't is our last match...and we know from experience what the refereeing is like in Munich.

-- Thu Aug 29, 2013 6:39 pm --

The seeding is ridiculous, but in a curious way it's got some of the groups spot on. Has city and united playing on the same night. Not sure of its true but I heard this morning on talksport that the TV conpanies won't allow that and so one of us will be moved I expect.
We are in the same half of the draw as them therefore we play on the same day. It ain't tricky.
We were expected to be paired with them and play on different nights but the TV companies chose different pairings so we're on the same night. On each occasion we are at home when they are away and vice versa.

Leverkusen automatically put in United's group.? As far as I can remember there was a couple of groups left apart from ours. Obviously they couldn't be in Munich's group but they could have been in the Porto group which I think came after ours.

Leverkusen and Schalke were paired for TV so had to be in different halves of the draw, that's why they could only go in the rags group.

OK, so a couple of thoughts about the draw and our group:

Bayern will be very tricky so lets concentrate on the other two. The received wisdom is that it's us or CSKA for 2nd place, therefore we have to match or better CSKA's results against the other two and either take four points from them or be better in the head-to-heads. That means no patient build ups, no tippy-tappy buggering about just hammer the feckers.

As for the rest; Chels should get through, the rags won't have it easy and Arse might be in trouble.
But do we want Arse to fail? If they finish third they could pick up some coefficient points with a good run in the EL.

Khimki Arena has a grass pitch. it may be in no good condition by the end of November though.
Why is CSKA playing there?

because their ground is being built, and Luzhniki stadium where they usually play their Euro games is about to be closed and partly demolished for reconstruction due to WC 2018.

As an added question is it ever possible given the complexity of the draw for it to all go wrong when they get to Pool 4. i.e. they have to put two sides from the same country in the same group?

The teams from the same country have to be balanced out between the two halves of the groups.

That's why, once Chelsea and Arsenal had been drawn in Groups E and F, we had to be in B, C or D.

There are four German teams in the CL, and as Schalke and Dortmund were already in the lower half of the draw, Leverkusen had to be in one of A, B, C or D.

And as Bayern were already in Group D, that reduced the options even further
