WW2 movies

Just remembered two somewhat forgotten Michael Caine WW2 movies from the late 60's and early 70's - Play Dirty (a kind of Dirty Dozen with cockney accents and scratchier uniforms) and Too Late the Hero. Good films both.

And caught a bit of The Heroes of Telemark the other day. Notable for the lovely nordic knitwear and retro ski jackets.

which is to completely overlook Kelly's Hero's - a bank robbery caper stapled onto a war movie with 70's hippy culture blu-taked all over the pair making it a fucking travesty of a war film. Paint filled shells FFS - because they make pretty patterns !!

Kelly’s Heroes was utterly ridiculous but I fucking loved it too.

Lay off with the negative vibes man.

It's called a genre mash up, baby

it still makes for a wank war movie whatever you label it. Its a pity because the caper movie set in some other genre often works but some space cadet from the late 60's still out of his mind on love, peace and other substances decided to make it contemporary by introducing hippyness - if he was gonna do that he needed a contemporary setting like Vietnam but I guess that was a bit too touchy at that moment in time?

If we are talking about films made during WW2 -
Weht The Day Well?
Pimpernel Smith
Freedom Radio
Cottage To Let
Atlantic Convoy
Casablanca
One Of Our Aircraft Is Missing
The Day Will Dawn
Mrs. Miniver
The Lion Has Wings
In Which We Serve
First Of The Few
Unpublished Story
Advantures Of Tartu

must say I do like Talking Pictures channel 328, these films were all produced really as propaganda films as the outcome of WWII was far from certain, could add Sherlock Holmes films, Arthur Askey and George Formby as well
Movies for men also has done gems. Watched Lost Command recently. Really good war movie with the added bonus of Anthony Quinn.

The man who never was - a true story about the allies placing a body in the sea off the coast of Spain gilled with false intelligence to bluff the Germans about the point of the invasion

Best - Cross of iron - since firat seeing this masterpiece on the fall of the germans on the soviet line always loved it.

Worst - lifeboat dull as fuck.

Special mentions to ice cold in alex, kellys heroes, a bridge too far, bridge on river kwai, dam busters
