Club career[edit]

San Lorenzo[edit]

Born in Buenos Aires, Zabaleta was raised in Arrecifes, Argentina. He began his career at Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro in 2002 after progressing through their youth ranks, having been signed at the age of 12 from local club Obras Sanitarias. He started playing as a defensive midfielder but eventually moved to the right side of midfield

Espanyol[edit]

Zabaleta was transferred to RCD Espanyol in 2005 for €3 million after being Argentina under-20's captain in the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship, which Argentina won.

In January 2007, he suffered a shoulder injury that kept him off the pitch for almost three months, already having established himself as an undisputed first team choice.
so, defensive/central midfielder-right winger-right back.

You've quoted wiki-fucking-pedia???? Christ almighty

As someone who has watched European football for many many years take my word for it, Zab was brought in as a right back after playing most of his final year there for espanyol

Where's the kompany retort??

I'm not retorting to that, if he played centre half for Anderlecht then I got that wrong and hold my hands up. my point was (to the original post a few pages ago) not to be so worried about flexible players moving out of position, they change positions throughout their careers anyway. Jimmy has already proved he can play attacking midfield, left wing, right wing central midfield so I'm sure he can manage right back. I quoted the wiki-shit thing because I wasn't arsed translating an argie dialect of Spanish.

I havent read through the whole post so sorry if anyone else has put this in but I would personally go for Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton. Young, very highly rated and English. Also, I would see him as a direct replacement for Micah.

It's a sad thing to say but I cannot see Richards reaching his full potential after such a long time out and if we can make some money from his sale, I think now is the time to do it before his value starts dropping through the floor. I have loved watching him develop but he makes some silly mistakes and I think it is time we put sentiment to one side.

Tin hat dorned...

How long is Zabba out for?
4-6 weeks is standard for this type of injury, which will put him out to the end of January, missing Liverpool spurs and the 2 west ham games, on a brighter note, micah seems to be back doing one to one work in training which might mean hes back sooner than expected.

The Guardian is publishing its top 100 footballers at the moment and Pablo is number 77...

There was a theory abroad at the last World Cup that Argentina didn’t produce full-backs. There may be some truth in that, but the full-back they do have is majestic. Zabaleta is a slow burn of a footballer, somebody whose excellence sneaks up on you. He doesn’t score many goals, dribble by people or make exceptional passes, although he uses the ball sensibly, sets up his fair share of goals and, perhaps best of all, doesn’t seem to have any notion that running into things might hurt. Zabaleta is essentially a tackle in human form, a mechanism that specialises in throwing itself at somebody running with a ball. He is also, at last, a regular in the Argentina national side and was a significant factor in them topping South American qualifying.

Great news if accurate!!

@MCFC now
PELLEGRINI: I think Pablo is not so big an injury. Maybe he will be back soon. Maybe a week or two, but the doctor will decide #mcfc
