I don't think that's a fair way to view it. VVD and Keita bring a lot more of what they are lacking, "defensive effort and energy" than what they are losing from Coutihno and Can "offensive excellence and utility." They have a lot more of the latter than the former.

The only question is whether the players pan out. If CVD becomes Kompany-esque like many claim he will, and Keita brings that Kante like energy to Liverpool, they'd be significantly more difficult to play against than one with the brilliance of Coutihno and the utility of Can.
on the other hand you could say that they now have no one to unlock defences when the fab four don't have space to play in.

Cardenas is an odd one. He's clearly tight with the Chilean NT players but has been calling this transfer as imminent since June or so.

To be fair, all reports suggest Sanchez thought it was imminent. He signed the personal contract even.

Keita is pretty useful at that kind of stuff. I doubt he'll be played as the defensive midfielder - it would be a weird move seeing as that's not the position which has brought him to prominence. Instead he's been playing box-to-box, and while he isn't a classic number 10, his ability to shoot from distance, great dribbling and direct running at defenders is all great for breaking down parked buses.

I think they'll play Lallana at #10 for the res of the season and then next year Keita box to box, with a new anchor and 10.

It would have been done in the summer.

All the personal terms were agreed and a contract signed if you go off the reports.

Arsenal held on until transfer deadline day until they realised that a sale was probably the best option but in the end they couldn’t get Lemar done in time.

Lalanna has a bit of that capacity. But once Keita gets here, this will also be one of his strengths. Albeit neither is individually as talented as Coutihno.

£25m + £5m in bonuses

Get it done. Clearly worth it. Barkley is in the same contract situation, hasn’t played all season and went to Chelsea for £15m FFS. I fully understand Arsenal asking for more than £20m.

£30m is not a bad price even with 6 months left on Sanchez's contract.

Obviously the contract situation means we want as low a fee as possible but imagine getting Sanchez for £30m in this market

He's a 100m+ player

The 6 months thing benefits both clubs. It's good for Arsenal getting £30m for a player who will leave for free in May. And for City to only have to pay £30m in this market for a really good player is fantastic - if it weren't for the 6 months, how much would we have to pay? This deal makes sense for both parties.
