Running thread

Ive just restarted after 2 years off. Currently doing 5 miles for long slow run, a 3 mile run at alternating speed up and slow down and one round of hill sprints. Combined with intermittent fasting 20:4 and hardly any carbs and I've not lost an ounce of weight in 3 weeks FFS

I can only do 4am with working and then looking after kids and stuff/family stuff.

All part of improving my mental toughness, anyhow.

I will also be eating just 1000 calories a day and no carbs but I pretty much do that now anyway.

Barring a Big Mac or Abduls treat!

You're going to need more than that mate, won't be sustainable, you'll be burning close to that on the run alone!!

Well if you ever decide to run in North Manchester, give us a nod and i'll do an early stint with you.........

Was it the Canalathon? Ran a section of that this Sunday as part of my LSR, just got onto the canal as some were running towards Rochdale, ran a mile or so with the,, looks tough but may give that a go next year.

I'm doing Manchester, looking forward to it.
Yup Canalathon. Was tough because of the distance but it is easy to run on and I can recommend. What time you wanting for Manchester?

I'm aiming for around 3.40, only my second one and even though i trained properly last year i went on the piss during the Derby and paid dearly the next morning running out of steam at 16 miles and finishing at 3.59.21!!

Like running on the canal for a while but doesn't it get a little boring after a while? And surely it's tougher on the feet than road running? all those cobbles!!

Thanks mate. North Manchester might be a bit far, though!

I may even mix it up one week and run inside at the gym, to get the mileage, just to spare my knees.

Sorry mate no idea where you live. This time of year at a nice pace you’ll probably be better outdoors, treadmill running is boring as fuck.

When I started to run quite 'religiously' combined with much healthier eating (only talking a year or two back) I shed so much weight...but then I started to lose muscle too. Ended up with a distinctive lack of arse. I then had a labral tear (which could mean surgery if the pain gets too much but many surgeons seem reluctant on this procedure and can cause complications in the future). In the end I had to force myself to do core exercise every single day...really drum into my habitual bassoon. It stuck eventually and it's now routine. Lunges, step ups (both with weights held above my head), press ups, dragon flags, hamstring stretches...I do those pretty much every day and with lack of time I often to them in the kitchen whilst cooking, or later on whilst catching a bit of TV. The pain in my hip is all but gone, but I've got the best ass I've ever owned (at 46).
One of the surgeons recommended cutting down on running and if possible run on soft ground (all but impossible) or on a treadmill. Hated gyms...but recently had a free week was for a local one...and absolutely loved it. I'm going to join soon - they do various classes as part of the membership so I'm going to try yoga too (did a bit in the past when I did a few years of martial arts). I maintain all this training and routine has saved my sanity, certainly after the last mad couple of years.
Still love running through the streets...much more than treadmills (despite the tech they have now...a blue toothed Gregg Wallace barking out over marmite scallops whilst treading 5k is an odd one). I love running past people, dodging cars...the smell of local restaurants...urban running.

Have a self diagnosed chest infection at the moment - tried to run it out at the weekend but I think I may have worsened it - what did you folks do in such situations? Rest it out?

still managing to run every day this year, last week or so has been really really tough mentally just to get out the door. Must keep going though!

Definitely going to give that a go next year then. What was in everyone’s rucksacks? Food and water I presume? Guessing there’s no water stations on the route?
There is some mandatory kit like waterproofs and headtorch which i didn't need but if you were doing one of the longer distances you probably would. There are 3 water stations on the route but you need your own bottle/cup - they also had flat coke and some fruit, biscuits, potatoes and stuff at the water stations. The only thing I used that I was carrying was a water bottle and some flapjacks. Easy train back into Manchester when you're done. Nice and uncomplicated.

Sounds good, definitely going to do it next year, doing Cyprus full marathon couple of weeks before this so should be good to go.
Would you recommend road running trainers or trail shoes?

I did it in road shoes and the official advice from the race is that either is fine. You definitely don't need an aggressive trail shoe though

Thanks mate! Was fine till the 18 mile wall and then it was a world of pain and had to walk/jog. Went to fast around 6-10 mark I think.

Currently laying on bathroom floor having to throw myself off the toilet with cramp.

Found 17-20 tough last year then managed to get going again after 20 till the finish, plenty of walking thrown in there that time. Hope to feel better next week but actrip to Wembley the day before isn’t going to help!!

Probably one last run for me tomorrow before the Manchester Marathon training gone well-any advice on carb loading for next week? Just pasta all week

I can’t do that carb loading, just eat healthy all week, plenty of water. Probably Pizza on Saturday and then hopefully be ready to go.

Believe it’s going to be wet on Sunday, at least it shouldn’t be hot.
