Running thread

Ran 200km last month and going for 250km this month (I’m on garden leave so have a lot of time on my hands).

previously (until I discovered Maffetone training)I averaged 80-120 a month and was constantly getting little injuries as I ran everything full tilt and paid no attention to my heart rate.

ive had to slow down significantly to keep my heat rate under 145 (max) but I’m losing way more fat than all those quick 5kms I was running.

mon Sunday after running 16km I “sprinted” my final 2km in 4m 10 seconds and 4m 8 seconds with little fatigue. It really does work.

loads of stuff online about it, but I really like this guys videos as he’s a relatively normal guy/ non elite runner that I can relate to :)

It’s brilliant isn’t it? I’m e lot older and have to run at a heart rate of 123 it’s embarrassing how slow you need to go at first!

Need to look into this Maffetone method. I ducked my intervals this morning as my left leg is a bit niggly - below the kneecap and pelvis/hip joints, so having a rest from running for a week or 2.

Just ordered the new Asics Gel Kayano 27 trainers. Never had Asics before always been Adidas Ultraboost. Anyone wear Asics and have any opinions on them? Found my last pair of Ultraboost a bit flat, felt like I was running in slippers.

It’s very effective, very rarely get injuries and I run in minimal shoes ( no cushioning) you take it very easy so don’t really stress the joints etc, once you get your head around it and stick to the plan it works.

I love Asics but you just have to make sure you get the right pair to fit your gait. I'm running in Gel Nimbus 22 atm. A friend of mine swears by Hoka One One trainers.

It’s transforming my ability to run more consistently. Previously I’d blast out a few 5s and the odd 10k pushing myself hard. Now I slow it right down I can run further and more regularly. Just been out and done 11.5k and did 7 on mon and Tuesday as well, which I wouldn’t of been able to do if I’d pushed myself hard on those runs. My legs are a bit tired after today, but feel pretty good in general. Going for 50k this week in a real bid to shift a bit of weight.
By the way, 250k in a month is an immense effort, every credit.

Take care all you runners,as a lad used to run all the time football, rugby, cross country, running to the shops,no fancy foot ware like today,60 years later two metal hips and a metal knee, now I stroll round golf courses and shops.Take care.

I never do "times" but decided to time myself over 3k this morning as it was too hot for a longer run and I wanted to to get my run in the bag asap.

Finished in 18 minutes exactly.

Is that any good?

If you scrolled back a few pages mate, I wear ASICS and was recommending similar. @Stoned Rose bought them too. Really comfy.

”any good?” is purely dependant on you mate, without knowing history it’s hard to comment. I’m nearly 50 and a big lump and do 5k’s in about 26/27 mins so I’d guess if I was trying to do a 3k as fast as possible I’d probably be able to do it in circa 15 mins, but I’ve been running consistently for the last 5 years.

This Maffetdone training how does it work then?

It's 180- my age so 151. Do I have to keep it under 151 HR?

I'm slowly getting back into running since lockdown done 40/50 a month then done 60 miles last month and keep building.

It's abit hot this week so done a few 5k treadmill runs but planning on getting outside again and just taking it nice and slow.

Yes that’s it, you should never go over 151, your zone is 141-151, there are a couple of tweaks for certain people. Tread mills are very poor for running really as it won’t be a natural gait. The key to maffetone is removing all the stress of running, if you also stick to the diet the changes are incredible.
You might even have to walk at times! Living in hilly Sheffield it can be very hard to run at those low heart levels at first.

wow that’s a good effort today. I was planning on 12km but couldn’t start until 12pm and was really struggling to keep my HR down so only did 9.5in the end.

Have you found you’ve lost much weight doing MAF runs? I lost a stone back in March/April due to working from home more so I could do more (none MAF) runs.

In 1.5 months of MAF I’ve not shed any weight but the beer belly has definitely reduced!

Mate every 3 months I was picking up little injuries that kept me out of action as I was always running close to full tilt. Watch that video on my previous post as a start point
