If Barcelona go legal and win, what happens next? The transfer window will be shut and they will have defeated their own greatest ever player in a public court case. They'll have to carry on paying the rest of his £48 million a year contract and he could just tell them he's injured most of the time. I don't know a single thing about this but I'm pretty sure it's not going legal.

If Messi was contesting his contract & lost, I think the court would put a price on Messi & I can't see it being more than Ronaldo's price.

So he would have sign for us while the window was still open otherwise it would be irrelevant what the court decided about transfer fees. So either way he's coming to us so absolutely pointless Barcelona going legal.

There was an article I read in one of the papers this morning which was discussing the release clause. The paper said that if City signed Messi on a free transfer and Barcelona complained and subsequently won a case in the Spanish courts then City would become liable for the full E700m. Given the risk, and that most observers seem to think that Messi's release clause is not watertight, I agree it is unlikely to go legal.

At the moment Barcelona can knock back City's interest claiming that it doesn't meet the release clause. So if the Barcelona board don't back down, what can the player do? All he can do in the time remaining is show the Barcelona board that it would not be a good idea to retain him i.e. make life awkward for Bartolmeu and demonstrate that it would be counter-productive to keep hold of an unsettled player

I think with Merson not being part of the first cull, Sky are doing him a favour and he has got more to lose (especially with his mental state) than Thompson,Nicholas and Le Tissier. For now they are keeping him for familiarity.
Cheers - so it those 3 that have gone - yeah - it must be a personal favour / sympathy from someone

I find that quite funny to be honest. And he knows full well City have had a team the rags could only dream of over the past few years. Plenty of records and trophies and names for us to celebrate now. Despised him as a player but he is pretty balanced as a pundit most of the time despite how much it must hurt to see us and the dippers winning the league over the rags.
Of course you`re correct.Too many City fans can`t take a joke when its aimed at our club. He`s hardly said anything that we didn`t say when that big Swedish girl joined the Rags, irrespective of whether its a fan or a pundit.Too many soft arses knocking about.

Basically if the player wants to he will leave. The Barcelona president has to make it look like they did everything they could to persuade him to stay

Pretty reliable reports Bartomeu has no intention to discuss anything but a renewal with Messi. While that is no doubt the narrative intended, the reality is probably Barto has a figure & exit strategy in mind for Leo and waiting for Messi to be sufficiently desperate to accept those terms.

I suspect Bartomeu will want to insist on a highly visible & commemorative exit to recoup some positive PR. But now, I am merely guessing. Bartomeu seems to have somehow stayed ahead of this and can dictate terms for a fairly untenable situation - still gotta believe this ends with him at City, the alternative seems improbable at this point

Well they would be getting compensation if they won & hoping it would be set at 2-300 mil instead.

The question is whether City would risk signing him with the threat of 700 mil compensation hanging over it.

As you say though, having Messi stinking the place out & costing them 170 mil, would be a catastrophe, so they can't keep him if he is determined to leave.

It's sad really that a player that has given a club 20 years service should be treated like this. Yes for those 20 years he has been very well paid and inreturn made Barca one of the best know football teams in the world and for some time playing the best football. Reminds me about of when Best wanted to leave utd.

I keep getting this sinking feeling that Pep will meet Messi and actually try and convince him to stay at Barcelona ffs. I hope i'm wildly wrong, but it'd be a very Pep thing to do...

Didn't they have a 3 hour long telephone conversation the other day, surely it would have been discussed then

The mans a clown wouldn’t take much notice what he says.

If there is any chance of a free transfer this summer through that option in the contract I want Messi & his lawyers to 100% try that route in the interest of City financials.

That is more important than the interest of Barca, and the separation of Messi and any relations they might want to salvage.

If Barcelona are more than just a club then why don't they let their greatest ever player, and long time servent, go with their blessing. Imagine us doing this to David Silva or Aguero.
