If only lockdowns worked, there’d be no problem. WHO advice on pandemics is clear that lockdowns should be avoided, at all costs.
They appear to have changed their minds when reporting on the great China success story in fighting the virus they actually sent out into the world. They sent medics to Italy telling them to lockdown at all costs and the rest of Europe quickly followed. USA currently at GDP same as the start of 2019, whilst Europe down about 8-9% U.K. about 10%. China meanwhile looks like it will have growth of about 10% this year. Funny that...
Then, lets look at Sweden. Not the ‘herd immunity‘ crap that is often mentioned, they were never doing that. That being said of course, every country in the world is pursuing herd immunity because thats all a vaccine is. What Sweden understood was that this was, in all likelihood, a very prolonged battle with this virus and that if you’re going to go down the draconian route, that is only sustainable for a short time. Simple messaging about social distancing, hygiene, ventilation and the like have never changed but they are still getting compliance because their government never declared victory, or gave a time when it might be over, or promised world class this that and the other, which is all seemingly beyond the whit of this government. Not only that but, they used the summer to sort their testing and tracing out and now recommend 5 days isolation post symptoms, as you’re highly unlike to be passing anything on after that time. Everyone in the house, save for the children, also must isolate but 5 days makes it a lot easier to comply.
This government have no nuance to their policies whatsoever , nothing changes save for ’everyone do whatever they want’ moving to ‘everybody stay at home, from midnight tonight’, which isn’t a policy at all. They’ve never levelled with anyone about anything, make up policy on the hoof and change laws overnight with no Parliamentary oversight and you now advocate ’harsh punishments’. Presumably prison for people trying to earn enough to keep a roof over their heads? Perhaps they should cut everybody's wages and everybody’s pensions by 1/3, so we really are all in it together?
