Scottish data

0 deaths (but Sunday data as Nicola warns)

961 cases (v 697 last week)

At 17.1 % positive (new record) (v 12.8 last week).

487 in hospital (up 38 in 24 hours) (v 242 last week)

This doubling is why Scotland have introduced their measures

The North West is going that way too.

Ventilators 36 (up 1 in day) (v 22 last week).

Can I suggest those who think the doctors today were just spinning a propaganda yarn go back and read my reports on the hospital data. You will find them in here every evening around 5 pm or so for weeks back now.

I do not work for the government or have any axe to grind. I have been in lockdown for months by choice and badly want this to be over. I am not interested in propaganda and denounce it when I see it (and it is out there unquestionably).

But the numbers I post on hospital patient increases, the numbers going on ventilators and how many of the deaths are in the NW each day are not fiction or deception. They are facts anyone can access.

I do and post them here day by day so you can decide for yourself.

But to do that you need to be able to face the numbers head on and not deny what they say because what they say is not comfortable.

Nobody is comfortable with what is happening but things will only get better if we face facts, deal with them and help one another through to when this will all be over.

Everyone wanting to be selfish just delays that day. They do not accelerate normality returning by whistling with fingers in ears or supposing some cabal in secret is trying to wreck our economy.

No government would be THAT stupid. Not even this one.
I’m not sure people think they’re spinning propaganda or denying that hospital admissions are rising but I, for one, do question the scientists scaring the crap out of people with a ’doubling every 7 days graph’ and then being surprised people are starting to be somewhat sceptical about what they’re saying and why they’re saying it. Yesterday, for example, there were 544 people admitted to hospital with Covid, even though at least 50 of those are likely to have caught it in there not gone in with it, and there were 275 admitted on September 21st, which is 3 weeks ago. Yesterday there were 1282 cases reported with 6288 reported 18 days ago which makes all the stats almost 3 times better than they were forecast to be. Cases are now rising more slowly across many parts of the north, which is the actual definition of bringing the Ro down but this isn’t articulated anywhere. I am by no means a ’denier’ I just think there should be some balance and , at the minute, there doesn’t seem to be any.

It isnt really March again as we know so much more now than we did then. And we have treatments that work. So things will happily not get worse than then - which is really comforting given that in March winter was over, the timing suited us with six months of Summer coming,

Facing six months of Winter from where we were in March would be disastrous, Happily we are not there now when we do face those winter months. We just cannot be complacent that this will not get worse now. It almost certainly will. Just not as bad as it was.

6 weeks or so ago in Warrington we had a week where only 2 people tested positive and I think that was followed by 6 the week after. There were around 3 people in hospital and none in intensive care.

We have now had more than 600 positive cases in the last 2 weeks alone and have 59 people in hospital and 9 in intensive care.

It may not be as bad as the Spring but it’s clearly a dangerous disease still than can take take hold quickly if people take their eye off the ball.

Everyone still needs to make sensible decisions, but not everybody is.

Ha. Appreciate the sentiment, but football really is trivial compared to not being able to hug your mum, dad, any family or close friends etc for over half a year now!

Oh I fully understand that. I haven't seen my father since March 16th and my partner has seen neither of her parents since 31st March. I was just trying to lighten the mood. Just because I'm about the jokey approach doesn't mean this hasn't affected me in way only people could imagine. But rather than focus on those, I have to hold onto the hope that this will pass. It has to.

I know mate, and sorry for being a miserable ****! Best wishes.

If only lockdowns worked, there’d be no problem. WHO advice on pandemics is clear that lockdowns should be avoided, at all costs.
They appear to have changed their minds when reporting on the great China success story in fighting the virus they actually sent out into the world. They sent medics to Italy telling them to lockdown at all costs and the rest of Europe quickly followed. USA currently at GDP same as the start of 2019, whilst Europe down about 8-9% U.K. about 10%. China meanwhile looks like it will have growth of about 10% this year. Funny that...

Then, lets look at Sweden. Not the ‘herd immunity‘ crap that is often mentioned, they were never doing that. That being said of course, every country in the world is pursuing herd immunity because thats all a vaccine is. What Sweden understood was that this was, in all likelihood, a very prolonged battle with this virus and that if you’re going to go down the draconian route, that is only sustainable for a short time. Simple messaging about social distancing, hygiene, ventilation and the like have never changed but they are still getting compliance because their government never declared victory, or gave a time when it might be over, or promised world class this that and the other, which is all seemingly beyond the whit of this government. Not only that but, they used the summer to sort their testing and tracing out and now recommend 5 days isolation post symptoms, as you’re highly unlike to be passing anything on after that time. Everyone in the house, save for the children, also must isolate but 5 days makes it a lot easier to comply.
This government have no nuance to their policies whatsoever , nothing changes save for ’everyone do whatever they want’ moving to ‘everybody stay at home, from midnight tonight’, which isn’t a policy at all. They’ve never levelled with anyone about anything, make up policy on the hoof and change laws overnight with no Parliamentary oversight and you now advocate ’harsh punishments’. Presumably prison for people trying to earn enough to keep a roof over their heads? Perhaps they should cut everybody's wages and everybody’s pensions by 1/3, so we really are all in it together?
I really take your point about how wishy washy the government has been on this and how a defined strategy has been non existent from the off, it's been a clusterfuck from the start and we are in agreement with that 100%.

Mix this with scientists unable to agree with anything ( The new one being the virus can live on cash for up to 30 days being the trending example) and you get confusion. Trump and his disenfectant statements, the crowds in Hyde park who take every conspiracy theory without even checking the rubbish they believe and we have a recipe for disaster.

Your explanation of this means you have thought it through, however you probably don't believe in the flat earth or that disenfectant injections will cure the virus, there are many out there that really believe that nonsense because someone "Important" told them that it's true.

When are the government going to release the details of the 3 billion in private contracts they dished out during lock down. Jobs for the boys.

I can't wait to hear about the business which was only 7 weeks old which won a whopping contract to produce PPE. They did really well in beating off competitors who specialise in the safety industry lol.

The main reason we are seeing more cases now is obviously because we are doing many many times more tests.

At least 10 times the number in March. Often more like 15 times. So a place with 2 or 3 cases then might almost automatically become 30 now. Because so many cases are largely asymptomatic millions who had it in the Spring were almost certainly never tested.

Itself good news if indeed people do not often catch it twice in a few months and cases of those who have are still apparently modest in number. That then suggests every day the numbers who still CAN catch it reduces. That will bit by bit make its transmission harder over the coming winter. Very good news.

Of course, there are also more likely to be a higher proportion of tests carried out in areas singled out as the hotspots like GM is right now.

These factors are a significant reason why the NW is high and London is low. But very likely not the only reason or necessarily even misleading as to where the virus is most active. But nobody is in denial that this will change and other locations will see cases rise.

In some ways those areas at the forefront will likely be the first areas to see the curve fall. Just as London did in the Spring. So by Christmas the NW might even be in a far better position than London. It is very possible.

That the % testing positive is rising daily is by far the most significant clue - though - that it is not just testing numbers rising that is creating an illusion of more cases.

And I post them daily for that reason when made easily accessible (which England are strangely reluctant to do)

Scotland has gone from around 2% in August to over 17% positive today - an 8 times increase - alongside more and more tests daily = in total a big rise in case numbers both clearly in raw totals but also in actual prevalence in the community.

That is why they acted last week.

It is happening very clearly in the North West right now too. And it is why England will act today.

Is that because they're low risk though, or because they just don't get as many people using them? It's not like a door handle where you touch it for a second, if you're using equipment in the gym, you're in contact with it for an extended period. It just needs proper rules though really. Disinfect the equipment between people. Do all of your exercise on one piece of equipment before moving onto the next, rather than switching between them constantly. And obviously the risk is probably different depending on the equipment. A treadmill probably isn't a huge problem.

I wonder if one of the reasons why poorer countries are often doing a better job is because they can hire people fairly cheaply to ensure that rules are followed. My gym closes every hour for disinfection. I can't imagine a UK gym paying cleaning staff to hang around all day. Most shops can often afford to have a dedicated member of staff at the entrance to enforce the rules. Perhaps that's one area the government could look at. Subsidizing things like extra cleaning staff or security on the doors.
C!osing gym's is what you say but also because people are breathing out heavily and with some force and we know covid hangs in the air and also goes further than normal breathing

On the general point of locking away the vulnerable, do you all realise all the nhs and other frontline services involve the BAM community , staff overweight and also with diabetes and other conditions, the lock away the vulnerable and the old is the stupiest thing written on this thread

If not going to the gym is suffering, then god help us.
Get fit videos work just as well as the gym and use door frames and sit ups etc , it was fine for us to do and now people have the wi things they can use at home , go for a run, warmed up in seconds, bike ride , walking over the coast , loads of things to do to keep fit , moaning cunts
