So to summarise, the government has put a solution together which doesn't meet the requirments of the scientists and has once again done it about a month too late?

Lovely, well done all....

Show me a room full of scientists and politicians that all agree with each other would be a start!

i think there is wiggle room built in on purpose here, people have said Local Authorities need more power and this, in a slightly twisted blame shifting way, gives them power to - 'even the scientists said you should do more' sort of way, if it fails. It's cleverer than usual, but still see through.

One of the major problems we have in the world today is we have entrusted far too much trust in politicians to make good decisions and not listened to scientists enough.
Which scientists though? - the ones telling us to live in isolation, or the ones that signed the Great Barrington declaration?

Total cases from the three nations today are 2325 versus 1909 last Monday.

That is actually a fairly encouraging smallish increase week to week.

But as always - Sunday data - which can be a bit of a factor in these things.

See where we are tomorrow for a clearer picture.
We'll be lucky to get a clearer picture. It's certainly not clear what figures are being used to make any calculation and, looking at the reports of 'how well' other countries are doing compared to Eng &Wales is probably down to using 'better' figures than we do. The default from the meedya is doom and gloom, but what makes me laugh is that everyone yer see and hear on the news, mayors of northern cities, opposition politicians, medical experts et al, they all know exactly what is going wrong, what we should have done all those months ago. Wonder why they didn't outline this at the time. We'd be Covid-free now, wouldn't we!

Eh? Politicians have always called the shots but lets say you are correct, science cant even agree on what we should be doing.

What do you think we should be doing? Test and Trace with everyone going about things as normal? How many times do we test every single one of us because its clear you can be negative one day and positive the next. Full Lockdown?

Its nature, its a virus, there is no politician or Scientists beating this thing anytime soon.

In tier 3, do both social and childcare bubbles not come into play at all? I have only just realised now that I am actually in tier 3. From the announcement I was left thinking it was just Liverpool city, but it also covers St Helens council area amongst others, which is where I fall under in Newton-le-Willows. So not sure what I can and can’t do in terms of childcare.

It's clear that in a number of countries we have fucked around and not listened to the reccomendations of the scientists and fiddled around the edges.

Also you are wrong, as countries have sucessfully eliminated the virus - so it is possible.

No one has successfully eliminated the virus, no one.

Comparing countries with completely different demographics is pointless before you wheel out New Zealand as well. Its like me comparing Dumfries & Galloway and Greater Manchester and me saying we have done it right up here. New Zealand have social distanced and limited gatherings like we have. They also have a population density of 15 people per square KM where as we have 275.

I'm quite surprised we haven't followed Antarctica tbh they have been shit hot so far.

Will we ever learn?

The Great Barrington Declaration is the product of an American libertarian political think tank, the AIER - based in Great Barrington, natch.

They campaign for small government.

The small number of scientists represent fringe opinion, and the more notable ones have been notably and serially wrong on Covid.

It's not a scientific document, it's political.

There are supposed to be, you should have to book a table, the tables should be far enough apart (ie not 1m where you can't do 2m), alcohol only with a main meal, everyone should be giving there true name and address for track and (don't) trace etc etc. I've eaten out 3 times since July, not been actually asked for any of it at any establishment, it's only when I've asked that it's shown to me. Generally those in the food industry proper (ie charge decent prices for their food and your custom) are already shit hot on hygene, they have to be or either people won't come, or they'll get shut down for making people ill. Every corner "pub" will no doubt now start doing "food" and become a restaurant, or a "takeaway", and carry on as they were, because there is nobody to police it anyway.

More mixed messaging all day today, piled onto already bad mixed messaging over the last few months, and still nobody is aiming the messaging at the people who need to hear it most. How many will have actually watched Van Tam this morning, Boris in Parliament this afternoon, or these 3 this evening, I'd be surprised if 30% of the country saw any of it, most of those with the TV on when they started will have turned over.

The majority of the young don't watch TV, just netflix et al, and it's never on there, and these companies will never allow it on their platforms because they go on too long for the majority of this country, who have a very short attention span.

The messaging needs to be being put out by those who people look up to from sport or music or whatever is interested, stick it on the front of some reality TV show, with no warning it's coming, make it brief and to the point, graphics are great, but when the most salient slide is the 14th you've seen, 95% of the population have already missed the 12 before it.
My children range from 18 to 30. I don’t think my 30 year old or 18 year old have broken a single rule and take the whole thing very seriously. My 20 year old son, less so. He lives at home, so we know where and what he’s doing, and he’s not at house parties etc. But he goes to the pub with different mates, pops in for a brew at their houses, gives his mates lifts in his car, brings his girlfriend round. And his mates are very similar. To me, the only thing that would really hit home to him, would be a reminder of all the things he’s missing. He has a season ticket at City, loves music/gigs/festivals, plays rugby and football, should have spent a month in Vietnam this spring. All gone. If a city player, a musician he loves, made it clear, that unless we get a grip on this virus, these things will never come back, it might hit home. He’s certainly not going to listen to Boris.

For me - and hindsight is a wonderful thing - the only way we could’ve gotten remotely close to New Zealand figures is if we’d gone to the absolute extreme and closed our borders from the outset, along with every other country, with all flights worldwide grounded. That wouldn’t have eliminated the virus (and you would still have the issue of millions of people needing to get back to their home countries) but it might well have slowed the spread and given countries across the globe more time to prepare themselves.

Its the nuclear option isn't it. We close all land and sea borders and lockdown completely in the hope we can see the virus off but even that wont work and it wont see the virus off. Its here to stay and we will have to learn to live with it.

In the meantime can we please stop comparing apples with oranges so as to try and score political points because its utterly pointless. Where there are people, there will be infections and where we have that, some will very unfortunately die because of pre existing conditions that leave them unable to fight it.

We need a covid jab, masks, sanitised hands, social distancing and an acceptance of what we are up against here and that is nature and that the best thing we can do as a species is to live as fit and healthily as we can going forwards because im far more worried about getting Diabetes and Heart Disease than i am Covid.

Local Covid Alert Level High

This is for areas with a higher level of infections where some additional restrictions are in place.

This means on top of restrictions in alert level medium:

  • you must not socialise with anybody outside of your household or support bubble in any indoor setting, whether at home or in a public place
  • you must not socialise in a group of more than 6 outside, including in a garden or other spaces like beaches or parks (other than where specific exemptions apply
Posted above, which is from Gov UK, as earlier posted following

In Manchester, from wednesday can x6 meet in a private garden

and is that currently not allowed?

Two posters kindly replied, but i still couldnt understand if above

is correct understanding of both current & from Wednesday situation?
