COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Whilst I agree with you, it’s impossible to lockdown again, how are we going to finance it, you are looking at maybe a trillion pounds to do it. How do we pay for it, it’s impossible.

This is the problem. I have no doubts of the severity of the economic impact on such a thing would cause. Catastrophic! Worse than the many many deaths that are the alternative? Fuck knows.

And sadly yes to have any great effect I suspect that lockdown would have to be the best part of six months because the weather will not be getting less helpful to Covid.

As I have maintained from the start the only way out of this is a vaccine and or treatment that would make Covid far less lethal. We had better hope that this as has been speculated is a matter of weeks away rather than months or years because if not in 12 months from now the world will look more like how it was in the 1930s at best.

Boris said in the presser that he is following the science ,he trotted that out in response to a difficult question he didnt want to answer , he clearly isnt as whitty and SAGE have told him what needs doing, rushi has put inplace the finances

And this is where i think Johnson lets himself down the most, he has a long established reputation for blatant lying but then just laughs it off and comes across as a likable rouge.

What he should be doing is being open and honest, if we are not going to follow the scientific advise then say why not and explain it. Don't lie to a nation at a time of crisis.

Of course, it was rampant political opportunism by Starmer but what some will doubtless take from it is his speed to do so. Boris has been notably slow to make vital decisions.

As I said earlier I do empathise with the hard balancing act he has had to make. This is a horrible mess to navigate. But when science tells you to act fast and it will save a longer shut down of the economy later to prevaricate and delay and do something much less effective instead is a mistake a prime minister in a pandemic will struggle to get over.

Unless he is very lucky and those who think this will plateau much lower than the first wave and we see that happen before he has no choice.

Unfortunately, Starmer is likely to have delayed any such lock down as Boris is not going to be seen to follow his advice/order. Doing that in the next few days is like admitting he is not running the country.

Starmer should have gone to Boris, suggested it and agreed to support him in doing it, Might have happened then.

I agree completely, it is very opportunistic but hard to argue against.

It is very easy to score points at this stage with very little personal risk to him or the labour party.

I just hope he isn't seen as coming in on a white charger when all he is really doing is saying follow the scientific advise.

Basically he will be getting the same info as everyone else he could have done this a few weeks ago. Until someone steps up and gets to the heart of the problem and makes a noticeable difference I ain’t listening to them. He’s basically saying he will just shut pubs and hospitality.

Interesting to see Sky reporting today's cumulative death figures on the ONS basis - 57,690 where Covid mentioned as a reason on the death certicate, way above the Government's minimalist figure.
The gov figures are spin , cant wait to get a freedom of information request into why the 5,000 were taken off

Scousers doing what they do best, always the victim.

Yet not a single fuck given choosing it upon themselves to ignore the advice and restrictions to flood the city centre with 25,000 people to have a title party.

That, and the Atletico Madrid game, put that place on a one-way ticket to chaos.

Feel sorry for those businesses there that did adhere.

UNfortunately, Starmer is likely to have delayed any such lock down as Boris is not going to be seen to follow his advice/order. Doiung thar in the next few days is like admitting he is not running the country.

Good post I expect Boris to wait a very short period of time and then announce tier 3 for lots more areas.

There is little appetite for a second lockdown now, first time round it had some novelty value and the weather was fantastic, people quickly tired of the lockdown and the VE day celebrations basicaly saw it fall apart.

Now people will be going to work in the dark, coming home in the dark, not being able to get out in the garden or walk around in fine weather for their daily exercise.

Sadly any further lockdown will be incredibly hard to enforce.

This isnt the first time starmer has said this tbf

I wish the unis would do sample testing of their students to find out when it's safe to go back on campus. Where are we at? 30% , 50%? No one has a clue because how would you know. Most don't get ill. Some halls they tested at MMU were 42% positive in freshers week so we should find out.

There were a couple Liverpool players that had been tested positive during their preason break in Austria

I'd say a winter lockdown is easier to enforce. Colder weather, less appetite for people to leave. Darker mornings/evenings.

The problem is educational establishments. While they remain open this virus wont be supressed as easily. Children are spreaders.

It wont when the numbers start getting scary. They already are. I was hoping that a vaccine would get here just in time. Oxford vaccine looks compromised and we don't know if that's legitimately the case or whether it's a casualty of US politics. A similar US vaccine has also gone down. That leaves us with Pfizer and Moderna. Target date for results end Oct and late Nov.

Our problem is our world beating test track and trace system , we have fucked up testing right from the start , stopping when everyone shouted test test test at us . I understand we had to build up our capacity but we turned down labs offering to do them and instesd gave it to private contractors who cant organise a piss up in a brewary . Harding saying nobody could forsee a rise in cases going into winter and having sent the kids back to uni beggars belief

Nothing's certain except that this is going to come up at PMQs tomorrow.
