I’m all for a 2,3,4 week or however long lockdown.
and as stringent as you can get. Close everything. Everyone stay indoors etc.

but I just know... after that period is up ... and we all slowly go back to work etc, pubs opening ... it will just be a matter of time before the sky breaking news yellow bar appears showing an increase in daily infections again, followed by the death toll.

it really feels like there’s no way of avoiding it. Just delaying it is all we can do.
In that case, drink up, life is always uncertain

If true it will leave us in a much worse place than anyone has really yet imagined. If no vaccine comes this winter by spring this country and others will be close to open conflict.

If no vaccine is available this winter for at least the vulnerable and front line workers ie healthcare then I really do worry for where we're heading as a country. Go to work, come home, do next to nothing. No football, no pubs, no socialising with family and friends, many will question what the point is any more.

Mine has sanitizer stations everywhere and people are certainly cleaning everything after use. I know they used to be bad but most are complying.

Can only speak about my own experience. I went until 23 March. No-one cleaning equipment. I was cleaning it before and after use as no one else I followed was cleaning the equipment. Trouble is, gyms attract selfish idiots.

I stopped going to mine through choice on around 18th March or so. This was after emails telling me they've made their gyms as safe as possible with sanitiser everywhere and all the rest of it, staff cleaning machines etc. Turned up that day and nada, zilch. Spent 15mins on a treadmill and left, felt unsafe.

Been back since they reopened and its night and day. Masks going in and out, and from what I've seen personally around 90% seem compliant so I hope that's reflected throughout each day. Sanitiser around the place and most people wiping down machines combined with staff doing their rounds every so often. Perspex screens in front of the treadmills. I feel more comfortable in my gym than I do at my work.

I think you see evidence even on here and now that is starting to happen to people. Its very clear that unless something changes the amount of people suffering more severe mental problems is going to be huge come next spring.

I am afraid that even almost becomes insignificant at the global instability this thing is beginning to cause, an instability that grows ever more dangerous and closer to triggering all kinds of conflicts across the world. Each month that goes by with no winning blow struck in this war on the virus makes it ever more likely that bigger more deadly wars will follow.

The more advanced and powerful nations have probably got til early spring to get this underway beyond that I can see some incredibly dangerous days ahead.

Why would Covid invoke war?

Just an observation and a question here, apologies if it's already been mentioned but.....

Why is Starmer not berating the Labour Party in Wales which runs the country for not implementing a circuit breaker there? It is very much within their gift to do it? In his address last night he kept emphasising (correctly in the circumstances) England - but where he has an opportunity to lead by example and put his money where his mouth is, he bottles it.

No conviction, cheap point scoring politics and it has never been easier to slam a government!

Really?

Economies tank, poverty rises, governments fall, instability and mistrust becomes endemic. crime rises, and things kick off.

Extremists thrive as desperate people will buy into any dream presented that gives them hope. There are more ethnic and religious divides as each blame the other for the poverty that has swallowed them all. Thats how wars start and all those ingredients are going into the pot.

I don't think I'd pick any to be honest, what we need in charge right now is the scientists who understand it, and are not influenced by politicians.
I agree except the scientific community are as divided as the politicians and the public.

It's interesting that the hand picked SAGE scientists are not 100% behind Boris and the Government.

Perhaps we should have a binary referendum Do you want a three month lockdown YES or NO. We could do with another 51/49 split.

I get that, but why would anyone go to war just for the sake of it when economies are tanking everywhere?

Who would the US pick to attack?

think you nailed it there.
Just to add, imo, it does make sense because it spreads the load on the NHS

Scientists disagree though. The SAGE request for a lockdown was a majority opinion. There was a minority against.

My mrs is suffering mentally with it all already. A normally strong woman just told me she didnt sleep a wink last night worrying about where it will all end , where its going, when she’ll see her mum. Etc etc etc
