The chief scientist advising the French government has said this second wave is spreading faster than the first around Europe. Have we just let down our guard? Is it because our restrictions now are less severe than in the early days? Is the virus more infective but less deadly perhaps? Or all three.
I read a couple of articles from European Doctors who thought the virus had become a bit less deadly a few months back. They didn't say anything about the rate of infection.

She also has the knowledge that whatever happens, scotland will be bailed out.
She does have that in her back pocket, she is also the first to scream injustice f she senses any, this is despite getting more than her fair share of the pie in the first place. You could say she is a very able politician she has Westminster over a barrel, she knows it and they certainly know it!

Todays top 10 red zone boroughs - though based on the 5 day old data - shows some of the trends in the daily data of weekly pop numbers for the 10 GM boroughs.

Here is the government list - excluding the Northern Ireland regions in here under different restrictions to the mainland.

Showing weekly cases and the Weekly Pop Score as I do daily for the 10 boroughs in the GM scoreboard each evening.

Knowsley Weekly 1000 cases Weekly Pop 662 (as I noted last night it has fallen from 176 a day to 107 since Merseyside entered tier 3 which this list will not yet reflect that as it is several days behind)

Nottingham 2031 wkly cases Wkly Pop 610 (last 3 day numbers 314, 247, 244)

Liverpool 2901 wkly cases Wkly Pop 582 (last 3 day numbers 444, 507, 340)

Blackburn 862 weekly cases Wkly Pop 575 (last 3 day numbers 188, 181, 151)

Rossendale 383 weekly cases Wkly Pop 535

Rochdale weekly cases 1120 Wkly Pop 503 (last 3 day numbers 181, 246, 198)

Salford weekly cases 1278 Wkkly Pop 493 (last 3 day numbers 256, 241, 186)

Rossendale is the real shock - a tiny Pennine valley area (where the movie Whistle Down the Wind was filmed and TV series Juliet Bravo) sandwiched between hot spots - Burnley/Blackburn on one side and Oldham/Rochdale/Bury on the other.

Wigan must join that list soon as it has a Wkly Pop last night of 553 and rising from 270 to 315 to 326 cases in past 3 days. Rochdale's Weekly Pop score last night was 593 well up on the 503 above after 625 cases in the past 3 days.

Indeed on last nights Wkly Pop data on my list only Stockport, Tameside and Trafford have a weekly Pop score below the 493 in the list from 5 day old data that has 493 pop score in the number 10 position.

Rochdale at 593 might well be pushing for number one as only Knowsley and Nottingham is above it on the numbers in the 5 day old data list. And both have been falling since.

Just a reminder to keep things civil and respectful please. Had to remove a fair few posts this morning because of personal arguments. Cheers.
You also removed posts that were simply stating that some post misinformation. Why? Seems like you can get banned/warned/posts removed for saying Heysel on here but lies and misinformation during a pandemic is fine.

Any scientists here know about the trial on the drug ravulizumab? Some seem to be saying this is being used to stop the over reaction in the immune system that was a big problem in the first wave and in trials going on at London, Birmingham, Leeds and Cambridge hospitals is seeing patients on the brink of death making near miraculous recoveries.

Is this an over reaction by the Daily Telegraph or is there truth in it?
I am not a scientist, but I did hear a very interesting interview 2 or 3 weeks back on the radio with a virology professor in the UK (name escapes me sorry) who essentially said the NHS were leading the way in the world on trials on new drugs that were making remarkable breakthroughs in treatments of Covid, I dont recall him being drug specific but he essentially said he thought that these trials and treatments were going to be making very significant progress on treating covid in the next few weeks. And that he thought it was likely that they would end up being more successful than a vaccine? He was clearly immensely proud of the NHS and said that they way the NHS was set up essentially puts it in a unique place in the world to trial these drugs on a mass scale. Could be the same thing Healdplace?

Yeah I mentioned earlier that talk of us in Spain being put in a 12am to 6am curfew was ongoing.
Honestly don’t see what problem they are trying to solve when you only have to see how quiet the streets are right now.
Bizarre

who is the Don? Trump? How have we let this happen? so our scientists develop a vaccine and we wont be the first to get it? That cant be right?
They put a billion into it apparently

Wouldn't be too far fetched to be honest.

There's precedent for monoclonal antibodies have multiple therapeutic uses, see Bevacizumab which was developed and licensed as a cancer therapeutic but was used in an unlicensed sense to treat wet macular degeneration. Unlicensed medicines can't be prescribed to patients.

If I remember correctly some CCGs from Northumbria(?) brought a case for use as a treatment for wet AMD because it was something in the order of 900x cheaper and at least as affective as the currently licensed treatment. I was involved in co-ordinating some stability studies in anticipation of a license grant to ensure patients / CCGs could guarantee stability for maintenance of 6-month supply in the clinical or at-home setting.

Wales data v last wk v 2 wks ago

13 deaths (v 5 d last wk, 2 d two wks ago)

761 cases (v 979 last wk and 766 two wks ago)

That looks hopeful case data. Even more so than Scotland.

Spot on mate. There is a danger the doom and gloom merchants will talk us into a long depression. It’s good that peole are supporting local businesses during these tough times.

I think Warrington has been one of the quickest town centres to recover its footfall in the UK. Back in Tier 3 now but the Rules don’t seem that much stricter than they were in local lockdown. As far as I can see I can still go to a pub as long as I eat, can still meet up with people in a park or outdoor setting and can still shop so not sure what has changed for me really.

When we had the first wave, lots of scientists and politicians were talking of the 2nd wave.
Now we have the 2nd wave, nobody has mentioned a 3rd wave.
Are we expecting a 3rd wave?

England hospiutal deaths in detail:

22 Oct adds 20 = 20 after 1 day (second day running 20 or more deaths in last 24 hours).

21 Oct adds 66 = 87 after 2 days (last Friday 44 added to = 57)

20 Oct adds 15 = 111 after 3 days (First 3 day total over 100 since 27 May and hiughest since 26 May).

19 Oct adds 6 = 95 after 4 days

18 Oct adds 8 = five day total of 80.

17 Oct adds 2 = 119 after six days. Highest deaths attrinuted to one day sinc2 28 May.

Others - 15 Oct adds 2 = 83, 14 Oct adds 4 = 79, 13 Oct adds 2 = 67, 9 Oct adds 1 = 49, 7 Oct adds 1 = 57, 6 Oct adds 1 = 48, 5 Oct adds 2 = 39, 2 Oct adds 1 = 47

They put a billion into it apparently

I would take that with a large pinch of salt.

All the article really says is that the first country to approve the product will be the first to get it. That's a statement of the blindingly obvious, not an exclusive arrangement.

Manufacturing is contracted to multiple sites across the globe; there's not one stock which will suddenly be mobilised to one location

eg Catalent in Italy: https://www.cobrabio.com/news/june-2020/cobra-supply-agreement-astrazeneca-covid19-vaccine

Cobra in Sweden:

Oxford UK:

India

etc etc

Northern Ireland data

5 deaths (v 2 last wk v 0 two wks ago)

1252 cases (v 1299 last wk v 1080 two wks ago) Again there is evidence of cases flattening with restrictions.

32000 tests

Seven day rolling total 6893 v 6708 last week v 5272 two wks ago.

The age split of the 6893 cases is: 0 - 19 (955) 20 - 39 (2667), 40 - 59 (2086), 60 - 79 (958) 80 + (227). The over 60 % is still very slowly rising. Hence the growing deaths.

Patients 296 (up 5) v 213 last wk v 132 two wks ago.

Ventilated 25 (up 2) v 20 last week v 10 two wks ago.

So the UK hospital deaths today are 167 versus 98 last Friday. A large jump, But it is less than yesterdays 181.

All settings reported last Friday from that 98 in hospital was 136. 140 are currently registered as Covid deaths occurring ON last Thursday.
