Northern Ireland do seem to be having more success with its circuit breaker. Will explain in detail why after. As it is not a total success and a big lesson for us all.

Deaths 9

Cases 566 from 37.8K tests. Very low % positive here.

Rolling 7 day cases down significantly from 5947 yesterday to 5424 today. It was 7000 + pre circuit breaker.

Patients 354 (down 7)

Ventilated 38 (down 1).

N Ireland: 3 wks ago v 2 wks ago v last wk v today

deaths 0 v 2 v 5 v 9 No slow down here.

patients 132 v 213 v 296 v 354 today Clear slow down here.

Ventilated 10 v 20 v 25 v 38 - much less positive - but where are the ventilated patients coming from?

cases 1080 v 1299 v 1252 v 566 today - very obvious plateau and now reduction of cases

Rolling 7 day case total 5272 v 6708 v 6893 v 5424 Again looks promising.

However, why the deaths rising?

Because it would appear care homes in the province now and are increasing and driving the numbers of very elderly people catching it and needing ventilation. THIS is the problem we all need to address as it will push death numbers up if we do not seriously address the matter.

There are well over 100 cases in care homes and the numbers are going up. And the age ranges of those testing positive are revealing that these are the big increase - most likely many in these care homes.

As the rolling 7 day average has fallen the numbers in ALL age ranges (even the 60 - 79 one) are dropping. But the numbers in the over 80s are rising even with smaller and smaller totals day to day.

In the 5424 of last 7 days to today there are:

aged 0 - 19 672, 20 - 39, 1947, 40 - 59 1742, 60 - 79 773 and 80 + 290

A week ago with 1000 more cases there were 274 over 80s And a few days before the circuit breaker when around 7000 cases was the 7 day average there were just 254 over 80.

An increase of under 20% in 10 days does not sound a lot but when it is matched with a huge drop of 1600 cases from which that increase comes and when the mortality rate for over 80s is remembered this is clearly why deaths in N Ireland have started to take off and ventilator beds are not falling.

This will happen everywhere else unless we have a better plan in place now.

Maybe those holidays in Spain weren’t the best idea
And all those selfish folks who weren't going to stop going abroad on their holidays for anyone They brought the new ultra spreadable variant of the virus back with them.
- Every one of them should have been tested on arrival back in the UK.
- Every one of them should have had to have quarantined till they got a -ve test result.
They weren't on either count.

I think it's a bit unfair calling people who went on holiday selfish. They didn't break any rules by doing so and if we had suitable testing at airports like they do in Italy this wouldn't have been an issue. Would you be as quick to call someone selfish who went to Cornwall or Wales for a week selfish? Spain was deemed safe by the government so anyone that why did nothing wrong in my eyes.

same for having a pop a guy who went to a couple pubs the other week.

anyone not breaking rules shouldn't be made to feel guilty going pub, holiday or anywhere else they fancy, in fact, do it - better than reading on here all the negative shite some (one in particular) continually post.

I think anyone who's been on holiday anywhere has been utterly selfish, but I understand that's just my world view. I think I'd have had much less problem if I'd seen people following the rules properly since the start but I just think it's an unnecessary risk and spread and so many people have gone without this year that no-one needed a holiday, but I understand people will take opportunities when they see them and will have seen the selfish benefits of doing so at the expense of killing other people.

I accept the tourism benefits and realise that I just have a particular view compared to others and I just have to live my own life because the past year has proven you can rely on, or genuinely trust, nobody pretty much due to our own human failures and ingrained pathological selfishness and lack of personal responsibility and integrity that plagues us as a modern day species.

Well they were allowed to go. If fact the countries concerned were gagging for people to come on holiday. The result: 80% more Covid-19 cases than we could have had if folks hadn't gone.
The issue is open borders during a pandemic. They shouldn't be open. As a minimum, if a country is on an OK list testing must be in place on return with isolation till a test is -ve. If a country is on the bad list then 2 weeks in quarantine.
A new virus will get in but waving it through in amazing numbers as we have done twice now is idiotic.
Tested happening too slowly is not a reason for not doing it!
As to quarantine - well that's a joke in itself.

Because going in a sealed tin can with 300 people you are not related to and to a covid hotspot, during the height of a pandemic is not going to spread the virus is it , the height of selfish stupidity

NOBODY makes you read anything you dont want to

This is an elite athelete experience

Ilkay Gundogan on suffering from Covid-19: “I was really bad for the first three or four days. I could hardly move, had pain in my limbs, head and throat and a slight feeling of pressure in the chest area, which I had never really had before...”

Ilkay Gundogan: “After the first 20 minutes of training, I felt exhausted and after I got out of the shower. The exhaustion felt extreme, and when I came home after the training sessions, I slept for hours

Don’t be surprised if there‘s a deluge of kids across the country trick-or-treating tomorrow, thus causing another wave of new cases.

England hospital data:

Up 146 today - lowest rise in a while. To 8681. It was last this on 12 May. A wk ago was 6074.

Ventilators up 15 to 803 (much lower rise than yesterday's 46). It was last this o 23 May. A wk ago was 563.
