Unless a group of countries in a union get together and write rules stating eu diplomats get same status as international ones..The EU is not a country, therefore their ambassador should have no diplomatic status.

May I suggest the Joint Market and the Customs Partnership. I’d like to think you were right, but honestly can’t see this government backing down, nor see how they could do it and disguise it.The way things are going I'll give it 6 months until we're effectively back in the SM and CU. However the government will be quite creative in what they call it.

Think we may need to wait a few years until the next government to do it.
Things would have to be going extremely badly for it to happen. We seem to be well on the way.May I suggest the Joint Market and the Customs Partnership. I’d like to think you where right, but honestly can’t see this government backing down, nor see how they could do it and disguise it.

Nissan say the deal has saved Sunderland...
They'll be making batteries (helps with rules of origin). It is good news; I wonder whether there's been a bung (sorry, start-up grant) for the new processes.
It will be promoted as the new best deal in history. The analogy that springs to mind is one where someone robs you in the daylight and then leaves you some crumbs for dinner so you can be thankful to them. The way things are going I'll give it 6 months until we're effectively back in the SM and CU. I recall that not too long ago concerns that London would be negatively impacted were brushed aside by some of the Brexiters. I wonder if they will now admit they were wrong. Worth a read of this and the subsequent couple of pages.New York benefitting from Brexit...
‘EU market users must now trade swaps on platforms in the bloc, or on a swap execution facility or SEF in the United States which has EU market access.
Britain has called on the EU to grant access to trading platforms in London, the world’s biggest centre for swaps, but Brussels has declined so far.’

You may or may not remember the song 'I'm backing Britain' which if I remember correctly was on a par with 'World cup Willie' in terms of annoying. It‘s the strategy to concentrate on the UK market, an idea that was floated in the FT a while back, to take advantage of other manufacturers having issues selling into the UK.
For it to work then UK consumers have to favour Nissan cars, which may happen if the costs are pitched right. It’s the old Bennite idea of ‘import substitution’, creating our own little bubble that favours domestic production over imports. Also called ‘Albanian capitalism’.
Think of Nissan as British Leyland because we have regressed to the economic thinking of the seventies as the deal with the EU prioritises sovereignty over trade, which is why we are having border and custom issues and will continue to have them because it is the deliberate aim of the deal and not just kinks in the deal that need to be ironed out. This was made worse by the Govt not understanding what a Single Market does and in some cases saying the Single Market didn’t exist.
The other issue is that it becomes a pressure point. Nissan’s pitch was ‘no tariffs’, yet the deal allows the EU to raise tariffs if we ‘diverge too far’, which brings us back to the point about the deal being a tool for the EU to ‘manage the UK’.
One question, is Blueinsa not on here anymore? I enjoyed jousting with him.
No idea what happened to blueinsa. Just disappeared a few weeks ago.Quite a fascinating read back. The problem starts and ends with people not realising what being in a trading bloc with a Single Market meant.
The FT are doing a run through of where we are right now and how we got here. Short answer seems to be ignorance, wilful and deliberate ignorance in some cases, and a bad negotiating strategy.
I will post some excerpts from the FT twitter thread, but to be honest it’s not anything we didn’t know or hasn’t been said a thousand times already.

So how will this work? Are they saying they are going to manufacture 100% of the vehicle in the UK? Good news for the NEast if they can deliver a sustainable model. I'm still confused though in terms of Nissan claims that 'the deal' has saved Sunderland. Do they mean saved as in 'the deal prices our competitors out of the market and we can prosper mightily with our UK built cars'? Good for the N East but not especially attractive to the consumer unless other manufacturers replicate that model.
having read the Guardian article, Nissan are claiming it as a positive and are looking to maintain exports. The advantages all seem to be around batteries. On the face of it some welcome good news, especially for the NE.The ‘deal saving Sunderland‘ is a bit of spin given the UK management of Nissan will be quick to promote the idea of a viable Nissan plant serving the domestic market and sucking up to a Govt who are likely to be in the game of ‘handing out money’ to smooth over any Brexit difficulties.
Sunderland is a plant with big investment behind it and already makes electric batteries (if I recall correctly) so giving it a go with new ‘domestic’ strategy seems sensible. You can’t blame UK Nissan management pushing for it to happen, indeed they had the foresight to lay all this out months ago. The only deal breaker was tariffs and no doubt they will be lobbying hard to make sure there is no threat of future tariffs. Back to that ‘pressure point’ again.
Our new economic plan is to relegate trade, prioritise putting up barriers to trade and immigration and focus on domestic production. Think Britain in the seventies, Eastern Europe in the old Soviet bloc and a trabant for everyone. Even cultural ties are to be discouraged, ie Erasmus.
This was why the State Aid, Level Playing Field argument was a big deal, the ability of the State to invest, determine production without hinderance etc. At the last minute we caved on these redlines along with fish and also didn’t seek relief on percentage of goods subject to customs checks, vet checks etc meaning we seem to have got the worse of all worlds. Although if the plan is to discourage trading with Europe then the plan is working a treat, even if we did sell it as ’no barriers to trade with this deal’, a lie that didn’t survive the first week of the deal.
