Political relations between UK-EU

You may or may not remember the song 'I'm backing Britain' which if I remember correctly was on a par with 'World cup Willie' in terms of annoying.

So how will this work? Are they saying they are going to manufacture 100% of the vehicle in the UK? Good news for the NEast if they can deliver a sustainable model. I'm still confused though in terms of Nissan claims that 'the deal' has saved Sunderland. Do they mean saved as in 'the deal prices our competitors out of the market and we can prosper mightily with our UK built cars'? Good for the N East but not especially attractive to the consumer unless other manufacturers replicate that model.
The UK market isn't big enough for other manufacturers to replicate that model so it'll be Nissans for all unless you can afford tariff laden foreign imports.

Nissan seem pretty bullish about maintaining exports because the deal introduced no tariffS. They are dismissing the additional friction as a small problem. I have attached the Guardian article. As I said to Bob, on the face of it it looks good news.

I'm not denying it's good news for the North East, and if they can export even better. It doesn't help consumer choice though if imports are subject to tariffs and/or NTBs.

I’m just taking it at surface value. Nissan have changed tack a number of times so let’s see how it pans out. You are right though, cant see anything for car consumers based on this deal.

Agreed. I overlooked the importance of no tariffs on exports and Nissan ability to maintain tariff free access by maintaining battery production in Sunderland. Any additional frictions they can absorb.

We sold the Nissan Note last year - the only British-made car I've had since a Talbot Horizon (and that was mostly Chrysler parts). Back with Citroen now, but I miss the pneumatic suspension.

Anyway, Unite is seeking an urgent meeting with the government to discuss the part that they must play in the full UK-wide electrification needed to secure this plant and others like it in the UK.

Pity we'll be going for hydrogen when the lithium runs out...

how did you find the Note? I had a Juke as a second car much to the derision of my two boys. I liked it fine as a fishing runaround. I think they make ok cars.

Fine. Especially liked the adaptable spaces - rear seats slide forward for more boot space, board in boot to provide level surface and hidden compartment underneath; underpowered for a 1.4 engine, but I gave up being a boy racer after the Citroen Xsara HDi (sounded like a jet engine). Thought about a Pulsar but they discontinued it.

Good time to buy foreign before the extra import costs kick in!

Where have all the Brexiteers gone? We need some positive news to demonstrate why it’s all been worthwhile. The best we’ve had so far is that Nissan might not shut down after all. Everything else has been a bit grim. For example small businesses unable to import or export without huge costs, empty shelves in NI, various problems for expats and people with second homes, finding out that the fishing and livestock industries are fucked and large amounts of financial trading moving away from London. There’s got to be some benefits surely.

Oh yes, forgot about the good news about Gibraltars’s border coming down allowing free movement with the EU although it is slightly tempered by the fact that EU officials will be checking passports of people flying in from the UK.

Could be worse.
Mustn’t grumble.

Background:

Brexit:

As EU only allows eels to move between EU countries, the regular restocking of Lough Neagh from eels caught in the Severn is now banned. The firm that exports them is laying off staff as EU exports were a big part of their business. And yes, the owner voted for Brexit because he believed the guff about global Britain would mean he could export them to Asia.

Where have all the Brexiteers gone? .......
For me - I have only recently posted what are, IMO, a couple of clearly truthful positions:
  • the regular (previously known as) Remainers have been caught out (again) having gotten their doom and gloom predictions badly wrong - and are now struggling to portray the current scope of issues as the apocalypse that they predicted
  • that the current scope of issues would have been greatly mitigated/reduced/avoided, if only the UK had a government in place during 2016-2019 that had been committed to the preparing for the UK to leave the SM and CU. So yeah - inconvenient perhaps, but clearly true - a lot of the fault for current issues sits with the Remainer led government of 2016-2019.
Of course pointing out my opinions - ones that I am particularly qualified and experienced enough to hold - is unwelcome to those that dominate the thread and therefore must be shouted down rather than debated.

Re other Leavers not bothering?

Well, I am sure that Remainers will seek solace in the reasons that they invent for that, but I would suggest that it might be because the they have had 5 years of the same old same old daft predictions being proven wrong - and afterall - in 2021 - they can just be comfortable in an outcome having been achieved that is beyond their best hopes.

And even now - when some potentially good news emerges re the Nissan situation - what do you get from the 'old guard' - convoluted attempts to place a negative slant on it.

No - it is more likely and simply, that you fellas have been wrong for so long, and not able to face up to that - and people probably have better things to do. People leaving you to your echo chamber should not be a surprise - and anyway, it is what you have always wanted.

Anyone who is still thinking in terms of being a remainer or brexitier are the ones holding the country back.

Quite pathetic really to try to find faults with every aspect of whats happening just to say "I told you so" or also to try to excuse the various problems and pass the blame.

There is no remaim or exit, what we have is the future, anyone still fighting the battles of 2016-2020 need to grow up and think about the country and not themselves.
