You can't just pretend there's no racism in the fanbase by telling everyone it's all online, or all post-2008 fans.

I'm absolutely not claiming there's not a race problem within our pre-08 fanbase and it's an issue within every fanbase.

I'm not trying to make a distinction from our pre and post 08 fanbase. Plenty of people support us after the takeover and have a genuine connection to our club. But we also have a section of that support who have no connection to the club, who feel entitled to success and have no qualms abusing our players when we lose a game.

You simply have to get used to it unfortunately. They will only disappear if City go back to being average again.

Depressing but sadly predictable. Seems to be happening to a different player every week, and really needs to be clamped down on by the social media companies.

Think Sterling just needs a goal and he’ll start to regain his confidence. Nothing’s coming off for him at the moment and he looks a shadow of his former self. Can’t see him starting on Wednesday, but hopefully he can have a positive impact from the bench. Certainly wouldn’t write him off though. Form is temporary, and all that.
 
He needs to go back on the right and get back to basics. Nobody is fooled by his cut inside move. He refuses to use his left and it just makes him easy to deal with. Rotate him RW and either have Ferran or Bernardo play LW or play Jesus there when not using Foden

The problem is people can't talk about a performance. There have been lots of posts on here after the game that are abusive of Sterling as a person, and not just criticising a footballing performance.


Just look at this thread. Its not enough for people to say he played badly today (or this season), they have to escalate every time. He's shit, can't kick a ball, can't shoot, can't pass, can't run properly, has no intelligence, he's weak mentally, he's just a tap in merchant. Then people escalate again - he was never good, he was always shit, I never liked him and I got dog's abuse for pointing out he was shit. And then that progresses the personal abuse calling him every name under the sun. He's a ****, sell the fucker, he's weak, he'll be lucky if [insert relegation candidate] give him a job. I can't believe he wants a new fucking contract (even through the club has approached him not visa versa)

And that's part of the problem. Because when you normalise this personal abuse over a game of football as acceptable on a forum, or twitter or instagram then someone's always going to take it further, whether it's because they think they'll get away with it because it'll get lost in all the other abuse, or because they want to show they're the most angry.

If you heavily criticise him, that's another.
But when you (not specifically you) start calling him shit, talk about how awful he is, make every attempt to say how awful he's always been, state how willing you are to get rid of/sell him, and whatever else, then that's another level.

Read through this thread since the loss today and you'll see that there's some severely emotionally fuelled bile aimed at him. This is the hate. This is what drowns out all reasonable critique. This emotionally charged anger is what establishes the culture of abuse.

This might seem similar to what is said at a game, but this is worse online. Because at a game there aren't going to be many people who hear you, nor does it linger past it being said. Online, not only does it last forever, but there's potentially hundreds, thousands, maybe even magnitudes greater of people that can read it. This starts the loop of people dishing it out, all in one concentrated space. The more posts there are, the more people that can see it. I can assure you it's the same on twitter and facebook. The negativity grows. Look at this place after a win, emotional negativity is drowned out. But after a loss, it's cultivated and grows and grows. People see this and repeat what they read here or wherever either here or elsewhere. With this abuse and hate, there's always going to be some stupid or legitimately racist people that feel it's appropriate to go too far. And with how prevalent it is after a bad result, that tiny percentage of people that have that mentality are a larger number of people than we realise.

It's not just City fans and it's not just Sterling, but when people can't control their emotions things always have the capacity to get out of control.

Thought he showed today why he didn't start against Dortmund and why most of us would want Foden and Mahrez on the wings if we were playing a cup final tomorrow.

He's just so hesitant at the moment and looks like he needs the defender to commit to a challenge before he takes them on. He's being far too reactive and not proactive enough and we have other options who look far more confident.

Sick to death of the abuse he gets though, it's never just criticising a poor performance, some people have to go one step further and get personal or over-exaggerate.

The racist abuse he's getting on social media is abhorrent, if the abusers are lurking on here just know you're not welcome at this club.

Grealish hasn’t yet approached the ceiling of his talent playing in a mediocre side.
I fear that Raheem might already have not only hit his ceiling but is already crashing back downwards
 
He's not been at his best for some time but today he was terrible. He just doesn't look right and he's played himself out of our best 11. In the big games, Mahrez and Foden are ahead in the pecking order and deservedly so, unheard of a year ago.
