Keir Starmer

Rascal you are probably the most loyal defender of the Labour Party on this forum and I applaud you for this, but if you have to ask that question it makes me sad you must see they are falling faster than arsenal mate
I am not a defender of Labour anymore, I am a critic of Labour. I left the party.

I used to leaflet our estate, not this time and my local councillor lost, we now have a Lib Dem.

I am a Socialist and I want to vote for Socialist parties, so that is why I suggested the question that Labour should ask is ......Why do you feel so distanced?

hartlepool was a 70% leave voting area .

despite that kier insisted on putting a strong remain supporting candidate in to fight the seat.

stupid idea and another example of Labour not listening to the people on the ground and trying to tell the people how to think rather than listening .

it’s a strong leave area , not all Labour were pro eu so there would have been other candidates they could have put in.

it’s a real challenge for the party now as to which way they go more moderate or hard left again. Unfortunately the public (outside London) seem to be rejecting both versions.

it’s a tough one. We need them to get it right for the good of the country.
Socialism is not hard left

Labour piled up votes where they weren't needed and lost votes where they were needed. Pro-EU Metropolitan areas voted Labour, but the red wall didn't.

Whether Brexit is a disaster or not is not the point Vic, Labour on the whole was on the wrong side of the debate when it should have been on the leave side. You simply cannot be left wing and pro EU as the EU is a capitalist construct. Labour became associated with the metropolitan liberal elite and lost the working class vote. We could debate it all over again, but it does not alter the fact that the country voted for Brexit and Labour were on the wrong side of history and now the people who voted for Brexit are stuck with a Government that will rule not in their interest but in the interest of capital because Labour were not brave enough to take the pro-Leave position and then govern in the interests of the people, not capital.
Dont think we will ever know whether brexit will be better or worse for the economy now, as the financial fall out from Covid has dwarfed everything. Starmer backing remain and being a knighted london based champagne socialist will always count againt him in some sections of the northern labour vote.

Do you know what a Champange Socialist is?

I'm no expert when it comes to politics. I'm always of the opinion that all politicians are just a bunch of self serving luvvies. But when it came to labour this year it was a case of if I didn't take the knee I was a racist. They jumped on the woke nonsense band wagon and the cancel culture shit.

Rascal, genuine question do you think being a socialist can also be seen as being a bit non aspirational by some voters?

I think theres an element of that for sure. It will be interesting to see how Sturgeon does as compared to Starmer as she is quite woke and she is speaking against the Torys and Johnson everyday, but she is patriotic to the extreme.

I don't know what Labour can do, the majority of the time their political stance is far more in line with protecting your average person/everybody but they have to take so many stances in a fast changing world that eventually they'll be behind a stance that somebody doesn't agree with.

People are genuinely having a go at them for taking a knee against racism but will happily go and support their football teams with players making the same stance.

The Tory party on the other hand are anti-change (although they claim they're for change) unless it benefits them, they would like all the issues we have to stay the same because it benefits them. They get far more leeway in the media for it too, which masks their errors far more easily. 'Oh you've been robbing us for hundreds of millions, doesn't matter because we expect that from you and you didn't take the knee'.

Baffles me that anyone could put an X in the Tory box after what they've done this year.

Edit: I'm just using the knee as an example because someone mentioned it 3 or 4 posts ago as being a stick to beat them with. There are many other examples where this is used.

Well its just a term the press used during Blairs time. To reflect london based wealthy labour voters, celebrities and MPs that are seen as out of touch with everyday working class people.
Who is in touch with everyday working class people really?

No one.

I will never be convinced the tories are.

Well wasn't expecting that after all the sophisticated political analysis in here and allowed to pervade most threads.
Bluemoon not a barometer? Impossible.
It was fully expected tbh.
You rarely see the Conservative voters on the political threads these days because they have no need to defend the indefensible anymore safe in the knowledge they will remain in power.
Sad state of affairs but says a lot about the mindset of much of the country.
