Coronavirus (2021) thread

The vaccine is very important but it’s not all about the vaccine. For example, we have the most vaccinated population and the most Covid cases in Europe.

Australasia have handled Covid a lot better than us and might continue to do so. We just don’t know.
Really hope they have but, the signs are that at some point maybe soon with Delta they're going to cop for a big wave and continually having harsh lockdowns won't be enough.

Just thinking about Hancock. Pretty sure he will lose his job in the next week and see his pay down from 150k to 80k. Chances are he will get binned by the wife. Lose his house. Be visiting his kids and go through a few years a bitter divorce battle. All for a bit of a better looking shag for a few weeks. We are all on the tightrope of life and things can change very quickly.
The biggest issue here is Hancock's appalling lack of judgement. It is terrifying to think he is in charge of our entire health service during a pandemic. You couldn't make it up really. How can someone this incapable rise through the system to the top?

Literally cant get my head round this. People still mithering about cases, why get vaccinated ?
Are vacs after all “not the way out”?

I understand the argument of more cases = higher chance of new variants. But beyond that I don’t understand why it matters at all anymore.

The media are loving it though, publishing scary graphs and charts about the latest ‘wave’.

The newspapers and broadcasters probably haven’t made as much money since 9/11.

The 'co-incidence' is the magic circle in which a group of people become friends, probably at Oxford and help each other all the way through life. The proprieties are observed outwardly but a form of freemasonry is at work. Hancock knew this woman at Oxford and, years later, appointed her to NHS directorship. The civil service board who oversaw the appointment probably contained magic circle members. Wheels.....
Nail on the head.

Watch out USA. Global wave on its way.
Phases of a global wave:

Stage 1: A few cases spike into lots of cases quickly somewhere and identified as a very infectious variant

Stage 2: Countries spot small pockets of new variant and put a ring around them and local restrictions to stem spread.

Stage 3: The world details the new variant and issues warnings to all to be on the lookout.

Stage 4: Best prepared nations minimise the impact with strict quarantine rules for anyone recently in the infected region. Enforced - not assumed to be followed.

Stage 5: One country (let us call it Weknowbest) announce there might be a new variant out there and having the best test abd trace facilities in the solar system are urgently investigating.

Stage 6: Weknowbest declares the variant is indeed out there and dangerous but already here and now cannot be stopped from spreading but was impossible to have been seen before.

Stage 7: Politicians squabble over over why early decisions were not taken in Weknowbest to minimise impact in this country where it now spreads a lot. They all blame the other guy.

Yor would think we might collectively learn something as a planet from this. Given it is going to happen again, And again.

My view is the one clear lesson out of all this when there IS a next pandemic.

Immediately create a war cabinet to take the decisions collectively. Then you instantly remove politics and having to balance what is needed for the nation and the world from what is demanded by your voters/party/the media etc.

Pandemics and politics are not compatible. Having to please your voters and saving the planet will inevitably create diluted or wrong moves because the right thing was not the thing that your backers want.

The nations that work that out will survive the next one far better.

Well, that's the problem and sexism in divorce and family courts for you.

Just watched an amazingly insightful BBC interview.

Reporter to man in queue at pop up vaccination centre for over 18s - what made you join the queue at this centre today?

Reply - to get vaccinated.

Wow, the things you learn on TV.

If Hancock does resign he could easily make a fortune by reviving the old Joe Cocker song Delta Lady.

Amazing how a song about something else is now so apt - even down to sharing the same four letter word in both surnames.

Over the years I have learned that sometimes the universe does behave like it is having a laugh at our expense.

Another Joe Cocker hit springs to mind too - With a Little Help from my Friends.

I’ve deleted the app. Testing myself 3 times a week anyway.

Potentially locking myself in the house because an app says so, when I know I don’t have covid, to ‘protect’ people who’ve been offered a jab but chosen not to have it? Fuck. The. Fuck. Off. My mental health is more important.

A year ago it was a vastly different scenario, but now the whole thing can sod off IMO.
FYI it isn’t law to isolate if the app tells you, so you are free to go about your business.

it’s only the manual track and trace contact that is legally enforceable and warrants a fine.

How do broadcasters make money from news updates?

Cases mean fuck all when all the vulnerable are protected by vaccines.

Almost all our current cases are in kids and the under 30s!
I’m afraid it doesn’t mate. A number of NHS hospitals are now on black alert, meaning they can’t take a lot more without being overwhelmed. That’s from a range of factors including Covid, such as the NHS having 85,000 vacancies at the start of the pandemic. Unlike the first wave, we are trying to get the range of services including cancer care, stroke treatment etc back up to normal capacity. We can’t just treat Covid numbers in isolation
And say it’s an old people’s disease.

As I’ve posted many times on here, there’s plenty for people to do Including going to the pub, watching live sport, meeting family etc. Some Volunteer gardening groups are being run to support people’s mental health and they aren’t subject to the rule of 6 restrictions.

More things should be open (unless the situation gets much worse) on the 19th July including access to more of the arts, theatre etc.

Which hospitals?

The main reason they’re on black alert is the bed capacity has been cut by about a quarter due to pandemic control measures. The only way patients can be socially distanced is by taking out beds to move them further apart. Thing is, it’s not working because the entire hospital estate is an ideal breeding ground for nosocomial infections so more people are testing positive whilst in hospital, having been negative and socially isolated for 10 days before they went in…….

That's because it doesn't matter anymore. First wave and second wave it did but this one it doesn't. It's the best it will ever be so we might as well just get on with things and have faith in the vaccine science, maths and what the hospitalisation and deaths data are showing which is a tiny fraction are getting ill and a tiny fraction are dying. No point worrying about variants that might not ever appear. The chances are any new variants will be less fatal anyway.

There's a lot of foolish people on here who think the below chart represents exponential growth. It isn't it's far far from it and looks absolutely fantastic to me. Not that you'll see or hear about it in the media though.

Exactly.

I talked about this the other day, basically any general ailment could be bloody covid nowadays.

Yeah, certainly seems to have way moved on from the original fever and persistent cough.

Two things to take from this, how many people aren't getting tested because they think they are only suffering from hay-fever? And to somewhat offset this how many people are only getting tested in the first place because of hay-fever like symptoms when they usually wouldn't bother?

It's bizarre how the symptoms completely change, I'm not clued up enough to know how all the variants which have been prominent in the UK up until now have had similar symptoms but this one completely different.
