Just seen some Danish twat on the news saying they are a Viking race and are coming to terrorise England again. Sorry pal Alfred the Great gave your boys one hell of a beating

Shakespeare. Bit too posh for my tastes, prefer a bit of Stanley Holloway....:-)

The Battle Of Hastings

I'll tell of the Battle of Hastings,
As happened in days long gone by,
When Duke William became King of England,
And 'Arold got shot in the eye.

It were this way - one day in October
The Duke, who were always a toff
Having no battles on at the moment,
Had given his lads a day off.

They'd all taken boats to go fishing,
When some chap in t' Conqueror's ear
Said 'Let's go and put breeze up the Saxons;'
Said Bill - 'By gum, that's an idea.'

Then turning around to his soldiers,
He lifted his big Norman voice,
Shouting - 'Hands up who's coming to England.'
That was swank 'cos they hadn't no choice.

They started away about tea-time -
The sea was so calm and so still,
And at quarter to ten the next morning
They arrived at a place called Bexhill.

King 'Arold came up as they landed -
His face full of venom and 'ate -
He said 'lf you've come for Regatta
You've got here just six weeks too late.'

At this William rose, cool but 'aughty,
And said 'Give us none of your cheek;
You'd best have your throne re-upholstered,
I'll be wanting to use it next week.'

When 'Arold heard this 'ere defiance,
With rage he turned purple and blue,
And shouted some rude words in Saxon,
To which William answered - 'And you.'

'Twere a beautiful day for a battle;
The Normans set off with a will,
And when both sides was duly assembled,
They tossed for the top of the hill.

King 'Arold he won the advantage,
On the hill-top he took up his stand,
With his knaves and his cads all around him,
On his 'orse with his 'awk in his 'and.

The Normans had nowt in their favour,
Their chance of a victory seemed small,
For the slope of the field were against them,
And the wind in their faces an' all.

The kick-off were sharp at two-thirty,
And soon as the whistle had went
Both sides started banging each other
'Til the swineherds could hear them in Kent.

The Saxons had best line of forwards,
Well armed both with buckler and sword -
But the Normans had best combination,
And when half-time came neither had scored.

So the Duke called his cohorts together
And said - 'Let's pretend that we're beat,
Once we get Saxons down on the level
We'll cut off their means of retreat.'

So they ran - and the Saxons ran after,
Just exactly as William had planned,
Leaving 'Arold alone on the hill-top
On his 'orse with his 'awk in his 'and.

When the Conqueror saw what had happened,
A bow and an arrow he drew;
He went right up to 'Arold and shot him.
He were off-side, but what could they do?

The Normans turned round in a fury,
And gave back both parry and thrust,
Till the fight were all over bar shouting,
And you couldn't see Saxons for dust.

And after the battle were over
They found 'Arold so stately and grand,
Sitting there with an eye-full of arrow
On his 'orse with his 'awk in his 'and.
Well I never. I heard that on Fivepenny Piece L.P. Back in the 70’s? Thought it was great because we were doing 1066 and all that in school at the time. Never knew it was the same bloke that did Albert and the Lion. Everyday is a school day on Bluemoon.

A slight tangent, that Radecanu tennis player girl who made a fool of her herself last evening is being interviewed by Sue Barker. She is wearing an England 3 lions shirt and has been offered support by Sir Marcus of Rashford on twitter. Media machine going through the gears.
Has anybody from the dippers mentioned lighting candles yet?

Perhaps and I am going left field here, perhaps she had a melt down for the sole purpose of meeting Sir Rashford of Marcus, MBE, VC and bar, Master Chef and Unicef Ambassador to the World.

Just sayin'

I think you are very mean. Events got the better of her
What we're you doing aged 18
I was on the streets of belfast, doing an operational tour, i was a proffesional soldier who knew what it entailed
she is a proffessional tennis player who knew that major tournaments in the media spot light is part of the game
just as well myself and all the other squaddies didnt let events get the better of us

if you cant stand the heat, get out of the kitchen and stop bleating about it

she bottled it and spat her dummy out while her bottom lip quivered, any one saying any different is bloody naieve
john mcenroe was spot on

How did we manage without the army of pundits?
Admirably. They bring absolutely nothing to the terraces at Ewing Towers. Most of them cannot read a game as it progresses and consequently resort to the nonsense that Player X had a trial with MANSH United and assorted Rag and Dipper anecdotes. Dreadful. I will only subscribe to a sports channel if they offer a pundit-free service at a reduced price which is a reflection of not factoring into my subs the inflated remunerations piled on these people.

What did McEnroe say ?

I didn't watch the tennis but just trying to catch up on what the fuss is about.

Unless I'm missing a quote people like Piers Morgan are putting words in his mouth. He didn't call her a quitter, a bottler or mentally weak. He said the pressure was too much and it was understandable(given her age I assume). So why were people saying he was wrong to suggest it was some kind of panic attack? The alternatives are either another medical condition(asthma, COVID etc and the medical team found nothing) or that she faked it to avoid a thrashing(wasn't there plenty of time to turn it around?). He made an assumption but it wasn't really a scathing one.

Even if she did have a panic attack, that's no reason to say she made a fool of herself or was being a poor sport. That's not what a panic attack is. Mental health is no joke either or anything to stroke your own ego with.

So in my opinion, the people claiming he was harsh are wrong and the people saying "he's right, she's a weak fool" are wrong also because that's not what he said.

Back on topic though, the media are cnuts, always finding red-shirted angles to push their agendas.

And can spell naive and professional.

mcneroe and kev pieterson sais she lacked mental strength and let thigs get ahead of her and she needs to toughen up rapid like
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Mcenro the one that was commentating on the BBC and Pieterson(and Piers Morgan) was just adding to it by reacting on social media?

The sky quotes I read weren't the full context but I still can't find him calling her weak or suggesting she was faking a panic attack. This is about as complete as I can find of what he said that triggered so many people:

“I feel bad for Emma, obviously,” said McEnroe. “It appears it just got a little bit too much, as is understandable, particularly with what we’ve been talking about this over the last six weeks with Osaka not even here.

“How much can players handle? It makes you look at the guys that have been around and the girls for so long – how well they can handle it. Hopefully she’ll learn from this experience.”

McEnroe also suggested the late start had contributed to Raducanu’s situation. “I don’t think it helped that the previous match went as long as it did because it made her think about it more,” he added. “That’s a lot to take on, especially when you’ve never been there before.”

According to the latest BBC figures, despite a £400k pay cut, Lineker is still the highest paid employee on £1.36M. Can't blame him for that salary as the fault lies entirely with the dolt who thinks he's worth it.
I would hazard a guess that nobody watches MOTD because HE presents it and nobody would not watch if HE didn't.
Personally I don't like the guy, I see a tendency for snide comments and put downs but a none to happy reaction when bounced back.

Hey 50 years. It’s a crazy sum and perhaps reflects he’s always on the telly. Worse for me is Shearer who is shown at £390k per year. What a sum for essentially being number two on one/two football shows per week (in a normal week), it’s no wonder the BBC want to shaft pensioners for the full fee.

Your sentence is a bit strangled but are you saying that nobody watches MotD because Lineker presents it? Viewing figures would tend to dispute that despite all matches being available somewhere for the last 18 months. The second part of your sentence looks like you think that anyone who doesn't watch it, purely because he currently presents it, would suddenly tune in? Is that regardless of who replaces him?

Yep, the best version was Fivepenny Piece's...

Saw them when I was a kid at the old Davenport Cinema in Stockport. Brilliant old group, combining funny songs with some lovely balads. All now long gone sadly.
